FEAST \u2013 Orthodox Christians (who make up the majority of Romania’s population) and Greek Catholics celebrate the feast of Saints Michael and Gabriel the Archangels today. Around 1.5 million Romanians celebrate their name day on this occasion. According to Christian belief, angels are spiritual beings who have conveyed divine messages to people throughout biblical history. Archangel Michael led the Jewish people towards the Promised Land, while Gabriel is the angel who announced the births of Saint John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

ECOFIN \u2013 Romanian Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare will attend a new meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) in Brussels on Monday, as well as an inclusive-format Eurogroup meeting. According to a statement issued by the ministry, the Finance Minister’s participation aims to safeguard Romania’s economic interests in negotiations on the European fiscal framework, reduce the administrative burden and ensure the efficient use of available resources for investment and development. “Progress in reducing the budget deficit gives Romania a strong case in its dialogue with European institutions and other member states. Continuing fiscal consolidation and honouring the commitments undertaken are essential to strengthening the country’s credibility, safeguarding access to financing and supporting European solutions tailored to the needs of the Romanian economy,” the statement said. At the inclusive-format Eurogroup meeting, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare will join his counterparts from EU member states in discussions on defence financing. The talks will focus on the efficient use of public funds and the opportunities offered by joint procurement. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will also take part in the discussions.<\/p>\n

DEBT \u2013 Romania’s public administration debt (government debt) exceeded 1,230 billion lei in August 2026, up by 25 billion lei from the previous month, when it stood at 1,205 billion lei, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance and reviewed by AGERPRES. As a percentage of GDP, government debt rose to 61.1%, from 59.8% in July 2026. Debt denominated in the national currency amounted to 549.54 billion lei, while euro-denominated debt stood at the equivalent of 552.27 billion lei. Debt in US dollars totalled the equivalent of 125.02 billion lei.<\/p>\n

ASTRONOMY \u2013 Romanian students have won two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the fifth edition of the 2026 International Junior Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad, held in Thailand from 1 to 8 November. Participants from 25 countries took part in the competition, the Ministry of Education and Research announced on Sunday. The competition consisted of four tests: one theoretical examination and three practical tests \u2013 daytime telescope observations, night-time telescope observations and a planetarium test.<\/p>\n

MOURNING \u2013 Poland is observing two days of national mourning, on Sunday and Monday, following a shooting attack carried out on Saturday in Krak\u00f3w’s main square by a far-right extremist. Six people were killed and another 15 injured, five of them foreign tourists. The attacker drove at speed into Krak\u00f3w’s main square and began firing indiscriminately at people with a semi-automatic weapon. He is now in hospital after being wounded during his arrest. He is believed to be a 24- or 25-year-old man influenced by far-right ideology. Images circulating on social media show a police officer firing at a masked man dressed in military-style clothing and carrying a weapon. Weapons and a large quantity of ammunition were found in the attacker’s car. Three more bodies were discovered at the suspect’s home: two women and a man, identified as the attacker’s parents and sister. Investigators also found numerous weapons, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced. Poland was already on high alert following a series of knife attacks last month, which the Prime Minister said were the result of a cult of violence fuelled by social media. The tragedy in Krak\u00f3w has prompted strong reactions across Europe. In Bucharest, Romanian President Nicu\u015for Dan and Prime Minister Luca Niculescu expressed their solidarity with the Polish people.<\/p>\n

ISRAEL \u2013 Israeli opposition bloc leader Gadi Eisenkot is due to formally receive the mandate to form a new government today, the Israeli presidency said on Saturday. The parliamentary elections held on 27 October failed to produce an outright majority. The main Arab political alliance has announced its support for centrist politician Gadi Eisenkot, 66, a former Chief of Staff, in his bid to form a new government.\u00a0 The decision reflects “the popular demand to prevent Netanyahu and his government from returning to power”, the alliance said in a statement. Meanwhile, an ultra-Orthodox party that has supported Netanyahu for three decades refused to recommend him to President Isaac Herzog, opting instead to abstain. This weakened Netanyahu’s chances of receiving the mandate to form the next government. A majority in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, requires at least 61 seats. In last month’s election, Netanyahu’s camp secured 53 seats, compared with 48 for the bloc led by Eisenkot. (EE)<\/p>\n
