Romania’s
\nhandball team drew 33-all in the match played away from home against Austria in
\npreliminary group 2 of the 2022 European Championship. Romania controlled the
\ngame in the first half and had a five-goal lead at halftime, 16-11. Austria had
\na spectacular comeback after the halftime break and evened the odds and
\nactually took the lead. Shortly before the final whistle, Austria was leading
\n32-29, but Romania upped its game and made it 32-all. Austria scored 12 seconds
\nbefore full time. In the last second, however, with one player short after the
\nred booking shown to Alina Ilie, Romania scored the final goal to tie the score
\n33-all. Bianca Bazaliu scored the goal and was Romania’s top scorer in the game
\nwith 11 goals overall. Also on Sunday, Denmark defeated the Faeroe Islands
\n39-19, also away from home. Denmark is ranked 1st with 4 points,
\nfollowed by Romania with 3 points, Austria with 1 point and the Faeroe Islands
\nwith zero points. Romania will play the next features at home, in March,
\nthen it will take on Denmark away from home. The top two teams in each group
\nqualify to EURO 2022, a tournament that will be hosted by Slovenia, North
\nMacedonia and Montenegro in November, 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Romania won
\nfive gold medals and one silver medal at the European Under-21 Rowing
\nChampionships hosted by Munich, Germany. Romanian rowers climbed onto the
\nhighest step of the podium in the women’s double-scull, men’s double-scull,
\nwomen’s four, women’s quad-scull and the men’s eight events. The silver medal
\nwent to the women’s eight crew. <\/p>\n

At the
\ntennis tournament in Indian Wells, totaling 8.1 million dollars in total prizes,
\nSimona Halep on Sunday was ousted in the third round by Aliaksandra Sasnovich
\nof Belarus (100 WTA), 7-5, 6-4. The Romanian bowed out after 1 hour and 38 minutes
\nof play. In the second round Sasnovich knocked out Romanian-born Emma R\u0103ducanu,
\nthis year’s winner at US Open. Another two Romanian tennis players were
\neliminated in the third round. Sorana C\u00eerstea lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to Ukraine’s
\nElina Svitolina, while Irina Begu lost to Shelby Rogers of the United States,
\n6-0, 6-2. These were Romania’s last representatives in the women’s singles. (VP)<\/p>\n
