The city of Istanbul last week saw the 2022 IBA
\nWomen’s World Boxing Championships. Romania was represented by five athletes, Stelu\u0163a
\nDu\u0163\u0103, in the 48 kg category, Eugenia Anghel in the 50, L\u0103cr\u0103mioara Perijoc in 54,
\nClaudia Nechita in 57, and Alexandra Petcu in the 81-kilogram category. <\/p>\n

The best Romanian performance in Istanbul was obtained
\nby silver medalist L\u0103cr\u0103mioara Perijoc, a result which also brought her Radio
\nRomania International’s title ‘Athlete of the Week’. <\/p>\n

On her way to the finals Perijoc secured wins against
\nthe defending world champion, Wen-Hsiao Huang of Taiwan, against Niamh Chloe
\nFay of Ireland and Dina Jolaman of Kazakhstan, who was world champion in 2019 and
\nthe en titre champion of Asia. Unfortunately, Perijoc lost the finals on points
\n3-2 to Hatice Akba\u015f of the host country. According to Agerpres news agency, which
\nis quoting Adrian L\u0103c\u0103tu\u0219 the headcoach of the Romanian team, Perijoc managed a
\nbetter show than the Turkish challenger. The referees’ assessment wasn’t quite
\nfair and due to the competition’s rules it could not even be challenged. The
\nsilver medal has also brought L\u0103cr\u0103mioara Perijoc 50 thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

Lenu\u021ba L\u0103cr\u0103mioara Perijoc was born in Suceava county,
\nnorthern Romania, on 3 February 1994. The athlete was discovered by coach Doru
\nIftime in 2010, while she was in the local IT high-school. Concurrently with
\nboxing she also played football for a regional women’s first leaguer. L\u0103cr\u0103mioara
\nPerijoc obtained her best performance so far in September 2019 – the gold medal
\nat the European Championships in Madrid. <\/p>\n
