Scandal involving National Anticorruption Directorate<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Anticorruption Directorate is again at the
\nheart of a large-scale scandal in Romania. The former Social Democrat MP Vlad
\nCosma, sentenced by a court of first instance to five years in prison, has
\nlaunched, via the media, serious accusations against prosecutors with the
\nProsecutor’s Office in Prahova County, in the south. He claims they allegedly
\nasked him to plant evidence in a case involving the former Social Democrat
\nPrime Minister Victor Ponta and the businessman Sebastian Ghita, who in the
\nmeantime has fled to Serbia. Vlad Cosma provided the media with audio
\nrecordings. In response to that, the Chief Prosecutor of the National
\nAnticorruption Directorate Laura Codruta Kovesi has denied the allegations:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Anticorruption prosecutors do not falsify evidence. They
\nobserve the law when gathering evidence. The manner in which prosecutors carry
\nout a criminal investigation is subject to judicial control. Judges examine all
\nour investigations to see if prosecutors observe the law when filing evidence.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n

\n
\n
<\/p>\n
Denying the existence of a so-called Illegitimate
\nparallel state, which, according to some people, is allegedly trying to take
\npolitical control, including by fabricating cases, the president of the
\ncountry, Klaus Iohannis, unconditionally supports the National Anticorruption
\nDirectorate and says that he sees no reason why the chief prosecutor should be
\nrevoked. President Klaus Iohannis:<\/p>\n

These are offenders who are desperately trying to
\nattack and discredit the National Anticorruption Directorate and its head. In
\nmy opinion, this is a pathetic and unconvincing attempt. As regards the
\nactivity carried out by the Directorate, you know my opinion. However, I shall
\nrepeat it: the Directorate and its leadership are doing a great job.<\/p>\n

In turn, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila has called on
\nthe Justice Minister Tudorel Toader to clarify the situation, because letting
\nit stall would have people lose trust in the system. Viorica Dancila:<\/p>\n

These things must be clarified. Their verification
\nmust be speeded up and a legal opinion formulated, because otherwise people
\nmight lose trust in the justice system, and this should not happen.<\/p>\n

Minister Toader, who has urgently returned to the
\ncountry from a formal visit to Japan, has announced that next week he will
\npresent before Parliament a report on the activity of the National
\nAnticorruption Directorate, of the Directorate for Investigating Organised
\nCrime and Terrorism and of the Public Ministry. Also, on the 22nd of
\nFebruary, in addition to reporting in Parliament, minister Toader will inform
\nthe press about the content and conclusions of the analysis of DNA’s activity. <\/p>\n

Romania sees record economic growth<\/strong> <\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
In 2017, Romanian economy grew by 7% as compared to the
\nprevious year. That was the biggest growth since 2008, according to data made
\npublic on Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute. In the last quarter
\nlast year, Romania reported the highest economic growth in the whole of the EU,
\nwhich was also confirmed by Eurostat. Economist Mircea Cosea has stated for
\nRadio Romania that this growth is a sign that real economy, private economy,
\nworks in Romania despite difficulties. However, he has also warned about future
\nthreats. Mircea Cosea:<\/p>\n

If consumption-based growth continues, we will not
\nbe able to maintain the growth at this level in the coming years. Because
\ngrowth centred on consumption is not sustainable, it just has peaks, as it
\nhappened in 2017, but then it can drop to half the percentage registered in the
\nprevious year.<\/p>\n

More equipment for the Romanian Army<\/strong> <\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
This week, the Romanian Government has endorsed the bill
\non the purchase of three HIMARS missile systems, and has passed a resolution
\nestablishing the conditions in which the Army will purchase four
\nmulti-functional corvettes. The vessels will be built in the next seven years
\nin a shipyard in Romania, and the first corvette is to be delivered within
\nthree years. The same resolution stipulates that the frigates owned by the
\nRomanian Navy must be modernised. According to a communiqu\u00e9 issued by the
\nRomanian Defence Ministry, this is the second army equipment programme stating
\nthat manufacturing should take place in Romania, by involving the national
\ndefence industry. The first programme was launched in January and provides for
\nthe purchase of 227 Pirahna armoured vehicles, most of them manufactured by the
\nNational Company for Military Technique in Bucharest. <\/p>\n

The European Year of Cultural Heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
The European Parliament and European Council have declared
\n2018 the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Officially launched in Bucharest
\non Thursday, the programme will consist of thousands of events aimed at
\nfamiliarising Romanians with Europe’s cultural heritage. Here is the head of

We want to make sure that anybody has access to this
\ncultural heritage. There are many free events, in which people can take part.

With a budget of 8 million euros, the programme
