In 2018, the year of the Great Union
\nCentennial, the city of Ia\u015fi was declared under Law no. 361\/2018 Historical
\nCapital of Romania. Also last year Alba Iulia was proclaimed Capital of the Great
\nUnion. Ia\u015fi was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia between 1564-1859,
\none of the two capitals of the United Romanian Principalities (Moldavia and
\nWallachia) over 1859-1862, as well as the capital of the Kingdom of Romania
\nbetween 1916-1918, during the Great War, when Bucharest was under German
\noccupation. Over May 2, 2019 and May 1, 2020 Ia\u015fi has been declared the Capital
\nof Youth in Romania, as part of a national programme devoted to young people.
\nOn June 1, 2019 Ia\u015fi was visited by his Holy Father Pope Francis, becoming for
\na few hours the world capital of religion. Ia\u015fi is a city of culture and the
\narts, of high-quality education, history, religion and tourism, but also the
\nbirthplace of scores of iconic Romanians.<\/p>\n
