The county of Bistrita-Nasaud is
\nthe birthplace of famous artists and people of culture. In the field of
\ntheatre, alongside a number of actors performing in theatres all over Romania,
\nstage director Radu Afrim stands out. Also, in the world of literature,
\nBistrita Nasaud has given Romanian culture great poets and writers, such as
\nAndrei Muresanu, George Cosbuc and Liviu Rebreanu. For almost 12 years now, the
\nLiviu Rebreanu International Theatre and Literature Festival, named after the
\nfamous writer, has been staged by the George Cosbuc Municipal Cultural Centre
\nand the Bistrita mayoralty in the month of November. The shows and meetings in
\nthe festival are venued by the Casa cu Lei Galleries, the Synagogue and the
\nmulti-purpose arena in town. <\/p>\n

\nat bringing before the Bistrita audience as many professional theatre ensembles
\nas possible, as well as quality literature. Theatre plays staged by actors in
\nBaia Mare, Targu Mures and Bucharest are presented in Bistrita, one every
\nevening. Before every show, literary meetings between Romanian and foreign
\nwriters are held. We have been very fortunate to have as guests, at the recent
\neditions, writers from Germany, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. We receive
\ntheir works a month in advance, and we try to have at least one of them
\ntranslated by the time they get here. We publish their works in our magazine,
\nConnections, to make it available to the public. It was great to also have
\nguests from the US, members of the Romanian Diaspora. Professor Teodor Damian,
\nthe coordinator of the Lumina Lina magazine, is always present at our
\ncultural events. He was impressed with what he found here, in Bistrita, with
\nthis combination of theatre and literature. Why do I call it combination?
\nBecause after every show, meetings between writers and actors are held, to
\ndiscuss the role of literature and theatre in today’s world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRebreanu Festival will also be attended by foreign writers and by Romanian

\nhave already confirmed their participation. Teodor Damian, from the US, has said
\nhe would like to come. Mr. Joel Conte, from France, has attended the latest
\nthree editions. He is a prolific contemporary writer, president of the
\nFrancophone Association from Paris. He has several new books and also several
\npoems dedicated to our town, inspired by his encounter with Bistrita, with the
\nmedieval fortress here, and also with the art of writing in this area. We are still waiting for confirmation from Italy, from Israel.
\nIsrael has been present each year with writers from Haifa and Tel Aviv. We also
\nexpect confirmation from the Romanians from Canada. Last year just as this year
\nwe’ll also have writers from China.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nproud of is Ioan Pintea, at present the manager of the George Cosbuc County
\nLibrary in Bistri\u0163a
\nNas\u0103ud. Poet Ioan Pintea studied at the Theology Faculty and was guided on his
\nway to theology and culture by father Nicolae Steinhardt. Ioan Pintea invites
\nus to make cultural tourism in the county of Bistri\u0163a Nas\u0103ud, the place where Lucian
\nBlaga started to write Divine differentials and where the father of the
\nwriter, dissident Dorin Tudoran, was born. <\/p>\n

\nNas\u0103ud is a cultural space par excellence, I would dare say it is first and
\nforemost a literary space. Probably it’s the miracle of the place. 3 great
\nRomanian writers Liviu Rebreanu, George Co\u015fbuc and Andrei Mure\u015fanu have in
\ntheir works something related to this space. We cannot imagine Rebreanu or
\nCo\u015fbuc without this space. Even if, at a certain moment, they lived in a
\ndifferent place, they took the spirit of Bistri\u0163a Nas\u0103ud with them. They drew
\ntheir inspiration for the themes in their poems and novels from this very area
\nof Bistri\u0163a Nas\u0103ud. Recently we have issued a mini-album entitled Literary
\nplaces and monuments in Bistri\u0163a Nas\u0103ud county. It is a well-documented
\nmaterial. We have also sent this mini-album to the tourism centers across the
\ncounty. It includes the entire literary map of Bistri\u0163a Nas\u0103ud county. People know
\nabout Rebreanu, Co\u015fbuc, Andrei Mure\u015fanu but they may not know about Ion Pop
\nReteganul or Veronica Micle, who was born here in N\u0103s\u0103ud. She was a poet and
\nthe lover of poet Mihai Eminescu. I also believe few people know that a great
\nprose writer, Radu Petrescu, lived in Bistri\u0163a Nas\u0103ud, more precisely in
\nPietri\u015f and Prundul B\u00e2rg\u0103ului. Also on many occasions
\nwriter Alexandru Odobescu came to visit S\u00e2ngeorz-B\u0103i. There are many letters
\nwhich Alexandru Odobescu sent home from S\u00e2ngeorz-B\u0103i. Not to mention the Wine
\nValley, where the Writers’ House is located and which was visited by all the
\ngreat classic and contemporary writers. Consequently, when we talk about
\nBistri\u0163a-N\u0103s\u0103ud, we talk about great literary personalities that were born here
\nor that visited these places.<\/p>\n
