\nAlgeria, Syria and Romania are taking part in the Ia\u015fi International
\nLiterature and Translation Festival – FILIT, held between the 19th
\nand the 23rd
\nof October.

\nin previous editions, readers again have the chance to meet
\naward-winning writers and important contemporary literary voices from
\nRomania and abroad such as the author of the best-selling title The
\nBoy in the Striped Pyjamas, the Irish writer whose works have been
\ntranslated into 58 different languages John Boyne, one of the
\nbest-known and most award-winning Spanish writers Manuel Vilas,
\nAlgerian author writing in French Boualem Sansal, Armenian writer
\nNarine
\nAbgaryan, who was named by The
\nGuardian among the best authors of contemporary Europe and whose book
\nThree
\nApples Fell from the Sky
\nwas a best-selling title, and the Romanian writer and philosopher
\nAndrei Ple\u0219u. The festival is hosting dozens of events, including
\nmeetings with authors, poetry and book readings late into the night,
\nworkshops and roundtable discussions for professionals as well as
\nconcerts.

\nIn
\nthe run-up to the festival, the FILIT Workshops for translators were
\nheld between 3rd
\nand 7th
\nOctober by the National Museum of Literature in Ia\u015fi together with
\nthe Ipote\u015fti Memorial House – the Mihai Eminescu National Centre
\nfor Studies. The workshops provided a framework for professional
\ntraining and discussion for translators from the Romanian into
\nforeign languages and saw guests from ten countries: Jale Ismayil
\nfrom Azerbaijan, Monica Constandache from Switzerland, Alexey Kubanov
\nfrom Kazakhstan, Joanna Korn\u00e1s-Warwas from Poland, Ferenc Andr\u00e9 and
\nCsan\u00e1d Sz\u00e1va, from Romania and translating into Hungarian, Monica
\nCure from the US and Eliza Filimon, a Romanian translator into
\nEnglish, Roxana Ilie, Romanian translator into German, \u0110ura
\nMio\u010dinovi\u0107 from Serbia, Klara Rus from Slovenia, Elena Borr\u00e1s from
\nSpain, and Gabriella Koszta from Hungary.

\nWe
\ntalked to writer and member of the festival’s team Florin L\u0103z\u0103rescu
\nabout the importance given by the festival to translators and the
\nfestival’s relevance for the Romanian public:<\/p>\n

\nThis
\nis why we named our festival the International Literature and
\nTranslation Festival, because we give special attention to
\ntranslators, especially translators from the Romanian into a foreign
\nlanguage. Apart from these workshops, the festival also features
\nother events centred on translators, from professional meetings with
\nliterary agents and translators to translation workshops for high
\nschool pupils. Translators go to high schools and teach pupils how to
\nmake a literary translation. As for the festival’s public, 80% of
\nparticipants are young and very young and I’m glad our festival
\nmeans something
\nto them. I’ll give you two examples. Gabriela Vieru is a well-known
\nliterary critic and a member of Timpul
\nmagazine. She has attended the festival every year, has even worked
\nas a volunteer in past editions, and this year she is coordinating
\ntwo events. She told me this festival was the first time in her life
\nshe met actual writers, when she was in her 9th
\nyear in school. I think that’s extraordinary how her life since she
\nwas a teenager has been marked by the festival. And she is not the
\nonly example. Ioan Coroam\u0103, who is invited as a guest this year, is
\nconsidered one of the most exciting new voices in Romanian poetry.
\nWhen I invited him to take part, he said he’s been coming to the
\nfestival since he was in 6th
\nform and that the festival was very important for him, he grew up
\nwith the festival. These meetings with writers I think are very
\nimportant, especially for young readers. This year, the festival’s
\nguests are going to 18 different high schools in Ia\u0219i and other
\nplaces around the county. This includes not just writers, but also
\ntranslators and other professionals from the literary industry. I
\nthink this is one of the most important achievements of the festival,
\nnamely changing how literature is perceived, showing that it can also
\nbe spectacular, interesting, and very much alive.<\/p>\n

\nyear’s International Literature and Translation Festival in Iasi is

\nLavinica Mitu, Liviu Ornea, Ioana P\u00e2rvulescu, Dan Per\u0219a, Bogdan
\nSuceav\u0103, Anca Vieru; Romanian poets R\u0103zvan Andrei, Ion Buzu, Ioan
\nCoroam\u0103, Teona Galgo\u021biu, Anastasia Gavrilovici, Sorin Ghergu\u021b,
\nClaudiu Komartin, Ileana Negrea, C\u0103t\u0103lina Stanislav, Veronica
\n\u0218tef\u0103ne\u021b and Mih\u00f3k Tam\u00e1s. Casa Fantasy hosts events focusing on

\nillustrators Sidonia C\u0103lin and authors Ioan Mihai Cochinescu, Simona

\nand photographer Cosmin Bumbu\u021b are the guests of special events, and
\nthe photographer Mircea Stru\u021beanu is presenting a literary and
