One of them was butcher Loloescu Matache. He started doing business in the wake of the Romanian War of Independence, around 1879, when he started building the famous Matache hall, which has recently been demolished. Back then, the market was located on the outskirts of Bucharest. In 1948, it became the “Ilie Pintilie” state-owned market, named after a former Romanian communist leader.

In the “Drumul Taberei” district in Bucharest, the main market has borne the name of another communist politician, Alexandru Moghioroş, for a long time. Going beyond its name, it is still the market of choice for the district dwellers.

<iframe allow=accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture allowfullscreen= frameborder=0 height=315 src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/9-ZJ9-kIf-E width=560>

<h2 class=title style-scope ytd-video-primary-info-renderer style=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; max-height: 4.8rem; overflow: hidden; line-height: 2.4rem; color: var(--ytd-video-primary-info-renderer-title-color, var(--yt-spec-text-primary)); font-family: Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: var(--ytd-video-primary-info-renderer-title-font-size, 1.8rem); transform: var(--ytd-video-primary-info-renderer-title-transform, none); text-shadow: var(--ytd-video-primary-info-renderer-title-text-shadow, none);><yt-formatted-string class=style-scope ytd-video-primary-info-renderer force-default-style=>The J</yt-formatted-string>ean Talon Market, Montreal

<div class=style-scope ytd-video-primary-info-renderer id=info style=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; display: var(--layout-horizontal_-_display); flex-direction: var(--layout-horizontal_-_flex-direction); align-items: center; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;>

<div class=style-scope ytd-video-primary-info-renderer id=info-text style=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; background: transparent; max-height: 2rem; overflow: hidden; font-size: 1.6rem; line-height: 2rem;>

The Jean Talon Market, founded in Montreal in 1933 and named in honour of the first governor of New France, is one of the largest markets in North America.
