US-Romania.<\/strong> The United States will
\nsoon send fighter jets to Romania to supplement NATO’s air policing missions,
\nafter fragments of Russian drones were found recently on the Romanian bank of
\nthe Danube river, in the wake of Russian strikes on Ukraine’s river ports. The
\nRomanian foreign minister Lumini\u0163a Odobescu had talks with the US secretary of
\nstate Antony Blinken, who conveyed Washington’s unwavering support for NATO
\nmember Romania. Earlier, Romania’s defence minister Angel T\u00eelv\u0103r met US
\nambassador to Bucharest, Kathleen Kavalec. In another development, the National
\nCommittee for Emergency Situations decided that Romanian residents of the areas
\nbordering Ukraine will receive RO-ALERT text messages on their phones warning
\nof possible air strikes. Vehicles will be sent to warn the civilians in areas
\nwithout mobile phone coverage. <\/p>\n

School.<\/strong> Almost 3 million pupils will
\nbegin school in Romania in Monday. The authorities are considering measures to
\nprevent and reduce drug use, with an emphasis on information and education.
\nEducation minister Ligia Deca said recently that a school safety action plan
\nwas signed and a legislative framework would be drafted to allow for the drug
\ntesting of pupils where there is suspicion of drug use. She said teenagers who
\nhave a problem with drug addiction must be viewed as people who need help and rehabilitation
\nmeasures, so her ministry is working closely with the centres for drug testing and
\nprevention of drug use, with the health ministry and with psychologists and
\nschool councillors to be able to help young people and their families in this
\nsituation. <\/p>\n

Earthquake. <\/strong>The Romanian
\nauthorities are in close contact with the Moroccan authorities and are ready to
\nprovide assistance, said prime minister Marcel Ciolacu. Hundreds of persons
\nwere killed in a strong quake that hit Morocco on Friday night, causing huge
\ndamage and wreaking panic in Marrakesh, a popular tourist destination, as well
\nas in other cities. The quake measured 7 on the Richter scale. Sad about the
\ndisaster in Morocco. Our thoughts go out to the families of those who lost
\ntheir lives in this tragedy. We wish the injured a speedy recovery, Romanian
\npresident Klaus Iohannis posted on social media. The quake triggered a wave of
\nsolidarity around the world, with many countries, including Israel, offering to
\nhelp the Moroccan authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Storm.<\/strong> Around 200 Romanian citizens
\nare in the areas in Greece affected by storm Daniel. Representatives of the
\nRomanian embassy in Athens and the General Consulate in Thessaloniki are
\nproviding the necessary assistance and support for evacuation, says the foreign
\nministry in Bucharest. With the situation on the ground highly unstable, the
\nRomanian nationals are asked to inquire about the state of the roads, to check
\nthe situation of flights, many of which are delayed or cancelled, and to stay
\nin contact with the diplomatic offices. Greek fire services and the army
\ncontinued on Friday to evacuate hundreds of persons from isolated villages,
\nfollowing flooding caused by the torrential rains in Thessaly, in central
\nGreece. Turkey and Bulgaria have also been faced with rain and flash floods. <\/p>\n

Volleyball.<\/strong> The Romanian men’s
\nvolleyball side defeated Croatia 3-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the CEV
\nEuroVolley European Championship in a dramatic match on Friday evening in the
\nBulgarian city of Varna. Romania will next face Olympic champions France on 11th
\nSeptember, which they have already defeated in a group match 3-1. The last time
\nRomania reached this stage of the European championship was 40 years ago,
\nhaving come 4th in 1983. The championship is co-hosted this year by
\nIsrael, Italy, Bulgaria and North Macedonia and is taking place between the 28th
\nAugust and 16th September. Romania won a European title in 1963, two
