Suspected of corruption, the
\nSocial Democrat Prime Minister Victor Ponta is in the middle of a row currently
\nmaking headlines in international media. Accused of forgery in deeds by private
\nsignature, accessory to recurrent tax evasion and money laundering, crimes he
\nallegedly committed a few years ago, when he was a lawyer, Victor Ponta was
\nindicted by the National Anticorruption Directorate. <\/p>\n

Moreover, the anticorruption
\nprosecutors called on the Chamber of Deputies to endorse the start of the
\nprosecution of the head of government, deputy Victor Ponta, for alleged
\nconflict of interests. The charges are related to the case involving Social
\nDemocrat senator Dan Sova, a former minister of transport, appointed by the
\ncurrent prime minister, as the law firms owned by the two signed the contracts
\nfor which Victor Ponta is already being prosecuted. <\/p>\n

Against this background,
\npresident Klaus Iohannis has called on the Prime Minister to resign. In my
\nopinion, this is an impossible situation for Romania: its Prime Minister
\ncharged with criminal offences. The worst for Romania would now be a
\npolitical crisis The Prime Minister responded on Facebook, saying that he
\nwill not resign, because he has been appointed by Romania’s Parliament,
\ntherefore only Parliament can dismiss him.

Moreover, in a notification sent
\nto the foreign partners and media, Ponta claims the case built against him by
\nthe anticorruption prosecutors is purely political and aimed at bringing down
\nthe government. According to the main opposition party in Romania, the National
\nLiberal Party, the Prime Minister’s decision not to resign is marring the
\ncountry’s credibility and has triggered the most serious political crisis in
\nRomania’s post-communist history, undermining the credibility of the Romanian
\ngovernment in the eyes of EU structures. <\/p>\n

The liberal co-president, Alina
\nGorghiu, has sent a message to all the MPs in the ruling coalition saying they
\ncan put an end to the current political crisis by voting on the no confidence
\nmotion filed by the National Liberal party against the government at the end of
\nlast week. In the motion, the government is accused of excess of power by
\nblocking, last year, the Romanians’ constitutional right to vote, both in the
\ncountry and abroad. <\/p>\n

The document stresses the fact
\nthat Victor Ponta wanted to become president by deliberately sabotaging the
\nRomanians living abroad, and he now refuses partial, local and parliamentary
\nelections, which would occupy the vacancies in both parliament and the local
\nadministration, for various reasons. Together with its partners in the
\ngoverning coalition, the Social Democratic Party believes that its leader is
\nthe head of a legitimate government and there is no legal and constitutional
\nreason that would justify his resignation. <\/p>\n
