The heavy snowfalls that
\nparalyzed almost half of Romania have stopped, but Romania continues to face
\nbad weather. A freezing cold has taken Romania in its grip. Temperatures
\ndropped to minus 29.5 degrees Celsius at Intorsura Buzaului on Wednesday
\nmorning, this being the lowest temperature registered this year. The lowest
\ntemperatures in Romania are usually registered there and in Covasna County, in
\ncentral Romania, which is dubbed Romania’s Cold Pole. Officially, the lowest
\ntemperature registered in the last 50 years in the area was minus 35.8 degrees
\nCelsius, in February 2005, a record low which had not been broken since 1939.
\nRomanians are facing extremely low temperatures not only in Covasna, but also
\nin many other counties of Romania. Meteorologists have issued a code yellow
\nalert against freezing cold valid until Thursday morning for the capital city,
\nBucharest, which is covered in snow, as well as for 19 other counties in
\nsouthern and central Romania. <\/p>\n

The cold snap is sweeping Romania until early
\nnext week, as meteorologist Mihai
\nHustiu has told us: <\/p>\n

The weather is particularly cold, and even freezing cold at
\nnight and in the morning, in most regions of the country. The lowest
\ntemperatures will be registered in Oltenia, Muntenia, southern and eastern
\nTransylvania, where temperatures are expected to range between minus 20 and
\nminus 15 degrees, and to drop to minus 25 degrees in places. Until January 26,
\nthe weather will continue to be particularly cold, the National Meteorological
\nAdministration being expected to come up with new forecasts on low
\ntemperatures. <\/p>\n

Very low temperatures, humidity
\nand gusty wind make humans feel the temperatures much lower than thermometers
\nindicate. That is why, physicians recommend to vulnerable people to stay
\nindoors and avoid the cold wave. In several cities across the country, such as
\nTimisoara, Sibiu and Resita, the locals, inspired by a campaign initially
\ncarried out in neighbouring Bulgaria, started hanging warm clothes, coats,
\npullovers and scarves on trees, for the homeless. Bucharesters have also been
\ninvited to join the campaign and make similar gestures, as Maria Tautu, the representative of an association, has
\ntold us.<\/p>\n

Maria Tatu: We hope the campaign
\nwill benefit as many homeless people as possible, especially during the cold
\nsnap. Some of our beneficiaries are even families with children in the 0 to 15
\nyear age bracket. Those who have warm clothes, blankets, mattresses, and
\neverything which can be useful during this period, is invited to bring them to
\nus, in the Cismigiu Gardens. <\/p>\n

Surprisingly enough for
\nmany, the Siberian cold wave make some people very happy, particularly extreme
\ntourism lovers in Romania! Accommodation in the realm of cold, ice,
\ntemperatures below minus 20 degrees Celsius -everything is possible in the
\nFagaras Mountains, in the Ice Hotel and igloos, at the Balea Lake. These days,
\na group made up of some 30 Britons went up there, at an altitude of over 2,000
\nmeters, willing to live a memorable experience. <\/p>\n
