Romania’s technocratic prime minister Dacian
\nCiolos was in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday. During
\nhis talks with the president of the European Commission Jean Claude-Juncker,
\nthe president of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and with other European
\nofficials, the prime minister presented his government’s priorities for 2016.
\nThese include the organisation of local and parliamentary elections as well as
\na number of reform projects. <\/p>\n

Other topics on the agenda of talks were
\nmigration, Romania’s Schengen accession and the Cooperation and Verification
\nMechanism. Mr Ciolos reiterated Romania’s wish
\nto play a more active role as a member of the European Union and becoming more

The Romanian prime
\nminister has underlined that Romania wishes that the best solution be found for
\nGreat Britain to stay in the EU. He pointed out, however, that Romania would
\nlike to clarify certain aspects relating to the situation of Romanian workers
\nin the UK at the European Council meeting on Thursday and Friday in Brussels.
\nAccording to the prime minister, the social benefit mechanism should contain
\nclear criteria, but this should be an exception, not a rule, and should be
\nrestricted to Great Britain alone. <\/p>\n

During his talks
\nwith the European officials, the Romanian prime minister also made the case for
\nRomania’s accession to the Schengen area. He said he would travel to the
\nNetherlands in early March, a country that has blocked Romania’s Schengen
\naccession on several occasions. <\/p>\n

\nminister also called for the lifting of the Cooperation and Verification
\nMechanism in the field of justice, saying Romania has its own mechanisms and
\nthe necessary maturity to carry on the anti-corruption fight and consolidate
\nwhat it has accomplished so far. He said he received positive signals in this
\nrespect during his talks with EU officials. The president of the European
\nCommission Jean-Claude Juncker said he was convinced the Cooperation and
\nVerification Mechanism would be finalised during his term if Romania continued
\nto meet the European requirements.<\/p>\n
