Ironically, disaster struck during a safety test at the&#13;<br \/>\nplant&#8217;s reactor four that went awry. A wrong procedure caused an exponentially&#13;<br \/>\nlarger spike in power output, which ignited the reactor&#8217;s graphite moderator.&#13;<br \/>\nThe resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the&#13;<br \/>\natmosphere and, according to estimates, 17 million square kilometers in&#13;<br \/>\nBelarus, Russia and Ukraine were contaminated.<\/p>\n<p style=text-align:justify;line-height:150%><\/p>\n<p style=text-align:justify;line-height:150%> Experts believe the most&#13;<br \/>\naffected countries by the accident were Norway, Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria,&#13;<br \/>\nRomania and Greece. Romanian Adrian Parvu was born with a malformation which&#13;<br \/>\nthe doctors believe could have been caused by the accident in Chernobyl. He is&#13;<br \/>\ncurrently working on a project entitled Born In April about how the&#13;<br \/>\nnuclear disaster in Ukraine has influenced people&#8217;s lives. His project was run&#13;<br \/>\nat a workshop organized by One World Romania. Adrian Parvu, who has done&#13;<br \/>\nresearch on the events in Chernobyl for his project has told Radio Romania that&#13;<br \/>\nthe radioactivity levels differ depending on the region. <\/p>\n<p style=text-align:justify;line-height:150%><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=text-align:justify;line-height:150%><a name=OLE_LINK1><\/a><em class=cms-italic>Adrian  Parvu<\/em>: Radioactivity level&#13;<br \/>\nvaries according to the region. An exclusion area was set up around the plant&#13;<br \/>\nshortly after the accident. It&#8217;s also been known as the 30 kilometers zone.&#13;<br \/>\nThere are a few thousand hectares of radioactive land there,  though the soil absorbed most of the radiation&#13;<br \/>\nafter the accident. The most dangerous area is 14 kilometers around the plant,&#13;<br \/>\nwhere radioactivity is higher and it&#8217;s not recommended to live there. However,&#13;<br \/>\nfew know that 3000 people are working in this death zone in shifts on a daily&#13;<br \/>\nbasis. They are doing maintenance work because the power plant in Chernobyl has&#13;<br \/>\ncreated problems people will have to deal with for hundreds of years from now.<\/p>\n<p style=text-align:justify;line-height:150%><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Parvu says that a pressing issue is the sarcophagus&#13;<br \/>\nbuilt around the plant, which might collapse. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p> The sarcophagus was built&#13;<br \/>\nin a hurry in order to block radiation and now it runs the risk of falling&#13;<br \/>\ndown. A huge metal sarcophagus is being built now with money from the EU and&#13;<br \/>\ninternational partners, which is expected to completely cover reactor 4 . And&#13;<br \/>\nthere are 3,000 people working on that. Had this sarcophagus not been&#13;<br \/>\nbuilt,  and if the older one would be&#13;<br \/>\nleft to collapse, the radiation level would again go up to the dangerous level&#13;<br \/>\nand could affect Europe again. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>30 people were killed instantly when reactor four in&#13;<br \/>\nChernobyl went off but no official figures have been released on the total&#13;<br \/>\nnumber of victims. 25 thousand people have supposedly died after taking part in&#13;<br \/>\nthe decontamination operations. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>30 years ago, the world witnessed the worst nuclear accdient in recorded history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":46,"featured_media":68348,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[37738],"tags":[30252,38456],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-68347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-today-in-the-news","tag-chernobyl","tag-nuclear-disaster"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
