King Mihai I devoted his entire life to his country.<\/strong> He took the throne when he was but a child. He was forced into exile as a young man, during deeply troubled times, when the face of the entire world was changing radically. After communism collapsed in Romania, the king was finally able to return to his country. Subsequently, he took on the role of advocate for the country he had ruled, acting as ambassador in the process of integrating Romania into European and Euro-Atlantic structures.<\/p>\n

King Mihai I: \u201cRomania’s place is in Europe, as it has always been, because Romania is a European country. Even though things are more complicated now, as a result of WWII and subsequent events, Western Europe must understand that Romania is a European country. Romania has to resume the place it has always occupied. I have stated repeatedly that it is very important for Romania to join NATO. It is extremely important for us to be a part of NATO. I deeply wish for Romania to be a part of NATO.<\/p>\n

On October 25, 2011, the day he turned 90, in his last speech to the Romanian Parliament, Mihai of Romania said: \u201cIt is within our powers only to make this country prosperous and admirable for all the world. I don’t see today’s Romania as an inheritance from our forefathers, but as a country that we borrow from our children. So help us God!<\/p>\n
