The EU
\nCommissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cre\u0163u has met in Bucharest with PM
\nViorica D\u0103ncil\u0103. The focal points on the agenda of talks have been the
\nabsorption of European funds and the inclusion of the Jiu Valley (centre-west)
\ninto a special program developed by the European Commission, to eradicate
\npoverty in that region.<\/p>\n

An action plan
\nto step up the absorption of EU funds will be developed by the Bucharest
\nauthorities, with support from the European Commission’s Directorate General
\nfor Regional and Urban Policy. The announcement was made by the EU Commissioner
\nfor Regional Policy Corina Cre\u0163u after a first meeting with the new PM Viorica
\nD\u0103ncil\u0103. Romania should step up the absorption of European funds as
\notherwise it runs the risk of loosing the European money, Corina Cre\u0163u has
\nstated. She has said that delays have been registered in such fields as
\nregional development, transports and the construction of regional hospitals. <\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Corina Cre\u0163u: I have full
\nconfidence that the new government will take into consideration these issues
\nthat have been left pending, will take action very fast and come up with the
\nbest solutions to accelerate their implementation. Practically, we have agreed
\ntogether to create an action plan and to receive proposals, by February 23, in
\norder to accelerate the accession of European funds. <\/p>\n

Prime Minister
\nViorica D\u0103ncil\u0103 has said she will lay special emphasis on the accession of
\nEuropean funds for transports and the construction of regional hospitals. She
\nhas stressed that she requested from ministries an updated report on the
\naccession of European funds. <\/p>\n

Viorica D\u0103ncil\u0103: I have
\ncalled on the minister for European Affairs to make a report on all European
\ndirectives which have not been implemented or on the stage of their
\nimplementation. I have also said that each ministry should have an updated
\nreport on the stage of absorption, because I consider it is very important for
\nRomania to have a good relation between its Government and the European
\nCommission.<\/p>\n

\nand Corina Cre\u0163u have also agreed that the Jiu Valley should be included into a
\nspecial program developed by the EC, in an effort to eradicate poverty from
\nthat region. <\/p>\n

Corina Cre\u0163u: I have
\ninvited Romania to submit an application and use European funds to give a boost
\nto one of the poorest areas in Romania, namely the Jiu Valley. I think that
\nbeing part of this pilot project is an important initiative and Romania should
\nplay a key role, considering its experience in the field.<\/p>\n

In turn, Prime Minister Viorica D\u0103ncil\u0103 has said that
\nthe problems in the Jiu Valley are a priority. Viorica D\u0103ncil\u0103:<\/p>\n

The Jiu
\nValley is a priority so it should be included into this pilot program. I am
\nconfident that we can take huge steps forward for Romania, and I’m referring to
\nthe Government, the European Parliament, and particularly to the European
\nCommission, in which we place our great hopes. <\/p>\n

Once one of the most important mining regions in Romania, the Jiu Valley
\nhas become one of the most underprivileged areas in the country. Romania’s
\nmining output has plummeted since 1990, many mines and pits have been closed
\ndown, and consequently many miners have been made redundant. <\/p>\n
