Two weeks after Romania took over, for the
\nfirst time, the presidency of the Council of the European Union, PM Viorica
\nDancila went to Strasbourg to present MEPs the priorities of the country’s six-month
\nmandate. <\/p>\n

Only several days before, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude
\nJuncker, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk and the President of
\nthe European Parliament Antonio Tajani travelled to Bucharest for the official
\nlaunch of Romania’s mandate. <\/p>\n

Unlike the meeting at the
\nRomanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, which was rather festive, the meetings in Strasbourg
\nwere concrete and often polemical. Brexit and the negotiation of the EU budget
\nfor the 2021-2027 period are the most important issues that Bucharest will have
\nto tackle in the upcoming period, PM Dancila has said. <\/p>\n

A total of 257 dossiers
\nhave to be debated in only four months, given the start of the election
\ncampaign for the European Parliament elections in May. It is important, PM
\nDancila has said, to show the European citizens that the EU institutions are
\nworking for them. Europe has always managed to overcome the obstacles and
\nrecover after less fortunate episodes of history, Dancila went on to say,
\npledging to put cohesion at the centre of the Romanian presidency’s agenda. <\/p>\n

Viorica Dancila: Emphasis will be laid on political cohesion, illustrated
\nby the need for unity among member states, economic and territorial cohesion aimed
\nat reducing the development gaps among member states and regions and social
\ncohesion, important through the
\nperspective of preserving the four freedoms of the domestic market of the
\nEuropean Union.<\/p>\n

Bucharest also plans to regulate the Energy
\nUnion, to have a coherent management of migration flows, through
\ncooperation between the countries of origin and the transit countries, and to
\nextend the competences of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. Special
\nattention will be also paid to the Western Balkans. <\/p>\n

PM Dancila has also reminded that postponing
\nRomania’s Schengen accession is regarded by Romanians as an inequity. In
\nkeeping with procedures in Strasbourg, after Prime Minister Dancila’s speech
\nthe opinions of the European Parliament’s political groups followed. Predictable
\nenough, the European Socialists and the Democrats, with whom the Social
\nDemocratic Party, the main party of Romania’s ruling coalition is affiliated,
\nhave supported the agenda presented by Dancila. In their opinion, having a
\nsingle energy market, solving the migration problem and ensuring the security
\nof the EU are very important.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Green, left and
\nLiberal MEPs did not hesitate to criticise the state of things in Bucharest,
\nwhere the perseverance with which the ruling coalition made up of the Social Democratic
\nParty and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats is ignoring the street
\nprotests and is pushing to change the justice laws and criminal codes is seen
\nas an attempt to subordinate magistrates and put an end to the anti-corruption
\nefforts. <\/p>\n
