Opposition parties, the National
\nLiberal Party, the Save Romania Union, Pro Romania and the People Movement’s
\nParty have signed the National Agreement proposed by President Klaus Iohannis,
\naimed at consolidating Romania’s European track. All parties agreed to support
\nefforts to transpose into national law the results of the May 26 referendum and
\nto correct the controversial modifications brought in the last couple of years
\nto the justice laws. The ruling coalition, made up of the Social-Democratic Party
\nand the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats refused to sign the agreement. The
\nhead of state again criticized the Social Democrats, saying the number of
\namendments they asked for exceeds the number of articles in the agreement.
\nKlaus Iohannis said however that other parties are still free to sign the
\nagreement.<\/p>\n

By signing this
\nagreement we don’t want to exclude the others, there is a possibility the other
\nparties will change their mind later, and I want the door to stay open to every
\npolitician who wants to build a better Romania. <\/p>\n

Liberal leader Ludovic Orban in
\nturn said the document can serve as the foundation of a genuine democracy in
\nRomania. <\/p>\n

There is no other way
\nfor Romania except a profound and serious integration, that should allow our
\ncountry to capitalize on all the opportunities and strengths at its disposal. <\/p>\n

Save Romania Union signed the
\nagreement because it supports the rule of law and an independent judiciary,
\nSave Romania Union President Dan Barna argues. <\/p>\n

This national agreement
\nis the cornerstone of a new construct that should also prevent people with
\ncorruption sentences from holding public office. <\/p>\n

PRO Romania leader, former
\nSocial-Democrat Prime Minister Victor Ponta, in turn explained why he signed the
\nagreement: <\/p>\n

I signed the agreement
\ntogether with my colleagues from PRO Romania Party for a very simple reason:
\nits principles are sound and benefit our society. <\/p>\n

The President of the People’s
\nMovement Party Eugen Tomac in turn expressed hope that politicians would
\nunderstand Romania is closely bound to European values. <\/p>\n
<\/p>\n

Our attachment to values
\nsuch as democracy, liberty, peace and the rule of law, which underlie the
\nEuropean Union, are non-negotiable. <\/p>\n

Social-Democrat interim leader,
\nPrime Minister Viorica Dancila refused to sign the document, as it does not
\ncontain the amendments tabled by the Social Democrats:<\/p>\n

I was not invited to
\ndiscuss the agreement, probably my statement contributed to that aspect. I’ve
\nsaid this agreement entails the consensus of all political parties, it is a
\nproject that can be amended by political parties. We wanted to table certain
\namendments, and since they were discarded, there was no reason for us to sign
\nthe agreement. <\/p>\n

The Democratic Union of Ethnic
\nHungarians also announced it would sign the agreement next week. <\/p>\n
