Having taken
\noffice last month, the new prime minister of the Republic of Moldova, Maia
\nSandu, made her first foreign trip to Bucharest, on Tuesday. This fact is all
\nthe more relevant as she initially said he would travel first to Brussels. The
\nRepublic of Moldova, which was created on some of the Romanian eastern
\nterritories annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 through an ultimatum, is home
\ntoday to three million Romanian-language speakers, one million of whom hold
\nRomanian passports. When Chisinau
\nproclaimed its independence on the 27th of August 1991, Romania was
\nthe first country in the world to recognise the new state. For the following
\nthree decades, Romania has been the most energetic and constant supporter of
\nMoldova’s territorial integrity and European aspirations. <\/p>\n

Today, says prime minister Sandu,
\nMoldova needs Romania’s support and experience in the areas of economy, public
\nadministration and the consolidation of the rule of law. This is what she told
\nRadio Romania:<\/p>\n

We have discussed ongoing projects.
\nWe would like very much to see progress made in respect of these projects,
\nwhether it’s the energy sector, education, the environment or climate change.
\nWe have been received with warmth and we are glad to be able to continue this
\ncollaboration and to count on Romania’s support in this not too easy situation
\nfor the Republic of Moldova, when we are trying to rebuild the state, to build
\na rule of law, to free the state’s institutions from captivity and give them
\nback to the citizens.<\/p>\n

Romania has been, is and will
\ncontinue to be the most constant and dedicated supporter of the Republic of
\nMoldova, president Klaus Iohannis told prime minister Maia Sandu. He promised
\nthat Bucharest would support the unblocking of European assistance needed to
\ncontinue reforms in Moldova and has also announced:<\/p>\n

The president’s office has already
\nsent the Romanian government a proposal regarding the creation of a group of
\nexperts from the relevant ministries who, together with the experts designated
\nby the government of the Republic of Moldova, must urgently identify the areas
\nneeding such assistance, for concrete projects to be initiated based on this
\nendeavour.<\/p>\n

In Bucharest, the Moldovan prime
\nminister also met her Romanian counterpart Viorica Dancila and the speakers of
\nthe two chambers of Parliament, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Marcel Ciolacu. Her
\nvisit was prefaced on Monday by that of her foreign minister Nicolae Popescu,
\nwho said that the Republic of Moldova is already firmly and irreversibly
\nanchored in the European space. Last year, 68% of the Republic of Moldova’s
\nexports went to the European Union; more than 20% of its exports went to
\nRomania, said the Moldovan foreign minister. <\/p>\n
