\nA draft law on
\nextending the mandate of the local authorities is expected in Romania
\nthis week, after the Constitutional Court has ruled out a government
\nordinance in this respect. In the meantime the opposition Social
\nDemocrats held talks with all the party leaders to issue a draft,
\nwhich besides the extension of the present mandates also stipulates
\nthe new election date. Here is The PSD interim president Marcel

Marcel Ciolacu: If we don’t
\nintervene quickly, local authorities can no longer continue their
\nactivity. I would like to also include a date for the future
\nelection, come up with an amendment so that if experts say that the
\npopulation is still at risk, we may extend the date for these
\nelections.<\/p>\n

Liberal President Ludovic Orban,
\nbelieves the Court’s ruling over who is going to set the election
\ndate remains unclear.<\/p>\n

Ludovic Orban: We
\nbelieve that a good date would be late September or early October.
\nNow we are waiting as we haven’t clearly understood from the
\nCourt’s ruling who is going to set the next election date – the
\ngovernment, through a decision or Parliament. Until we see the
\ncourt’s motivation, we cannot precisely say tell that.<\/p>\n

\nLocal election should be staged in
\nautumn and the ones for Parliament on the set date – was a message
\nconveyed last week by politicians during a round of debates over the
\npolitical parties’ scenarios concerning the upcoming elections.

The Social Democrats have made an
\nappeal for consensus among all the political forces, based on
\ndialogue including with civil society. USR president Dan Barna
\npointed out that these local and Parliamentary elections might have
\nthe lowest turnout in the past 30 years at the same time pleading for
\nthe implementation of the postal voting. The measure was supported by
\nthe Liberals as well. Other proposals include a lower number of
\nsignatures and the possibility of forwarding online applications.<\/p>\n

\nRomania leader Victor Ponta believes the period of time between the
\ntwo election rounds must be as short as possible.

\nexpenses, organisation, the risk of spreading the disease etc. And it
\nalso make sense from a political viewpoint, says Victor Ponta
\nadding that PRO Romania will be supporting any modern voting measure

\ndevelopment, C\u0103lin Popescu-T\u0103riceanu, president of ALDE last week
\nannounced that his group together with PSD and Pro Romania were
\nholding talks on forging a center-to-left coalition in order to run
