Only a few weeks earlier, in October 1970, she had accompanied Romania\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> leader himself, Nicolae Ceausescu, and his wife during their unofficial tour of the West Coast of the United States, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">as they had <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">flown to America to attend the 25<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> anniversary of the UN General Assembly. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Shirley Temple was a passionate environmental activist, and her views back in 1970 were in many ways ahead of time, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">as can be seen from her press conference in Romania<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">: \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">We can no longer take our human environment for granted. [&#8230;] What the world needs, concerning problems of the human environment, is management. We need solutions from the scientists [\u2026] and then it will be up to individual governments to pass legislation as they choose.
