At the highest levels, namely in leadership positions and as members of national science academies, however, women account for only 12%.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">According to data from 2023, in Romania, girls and women account for 41% of graduates in STEM disciplines (namely science, technology, engineering and mathematics), which is above the European average of 32.8%. The following countries in the European ranking, with the highest percentages in this respect, are Poland and Greece. Despite this, women doctoral graduates in science and technology account for only 0.24% of the total population of Romania, placing the country at the bottom of the ranking in the European Union. Moreover, only one in five people employed in STEM fields in Romania is a woman. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Science experts believe that we should look less at the numbers that place Romania among the top countries for women with undergraduate degrees or working in science and more at the low representation of women in leadership positions <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">in the field of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">research. A possible explanation for <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">the highest percentage of female graduates in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">STEM fields <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">in Romania may be the result of government policy back during the communist regime. The latter\u2019s e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">fforts to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">achieve <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">mass literacy and professionali<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">e women with the aim of moderni<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">ing society were not based on gender equality or feminist <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">ideas<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Some solutions <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">to the present situation have come from <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">school<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">namely <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">from <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">girls directly affected by this inequality. The &#8220;Girls in STEM&#8221; project was initiated in May-June 2024 by the Girl Up Neuroscience <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">organi<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ation<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">which is funded by the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">United Nation<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and led by ten young high school students.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Marina Suvac, a 12th grade student at the Vasile Alecsandri National College in Gala\u021bi (<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">eastern Romania) and the president of the Girl Up Neuroscience organi<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ation, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">explains<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;I noticed th<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">e <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">lack of representation <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">women in this field. I&#8217;m passionate about neuroscience <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and there are <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">many projects like Girl in STEM, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">encouraging <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">women in science in general, and they are usually focused on high school students, but I thought of doing something more specific in neuroscience, because STEM is a larger area, it includes more, and that&#8217;s basically how Girl Up Neuroscience came about. I also found this international initiative, Girl Up, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">they have a very detailed website, and from there I learned a little more about them and I wanted to be part of their change somehow.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Although there are projects that aim to encourage girls to pursue these fields, Marina <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Suvac<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> says that they are mainly aimed at high school students. In her opinion, this stage is already too late: the profile of the high school has already been chosen, and the idea that the exact sciences are more of a male field is already ingrained. Asked what they have managed to do so far, in their free time, when they are not attending classes, Marina Suvac answers:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;We <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">gave<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">about <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">nine webinars, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">available nationally, with <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">speakers from various fields. There were a lot of female speakers, from a lot of fields, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">discussing <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">both women in STEM <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">generally<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, but also <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">specifically <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">feminism <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">or<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> neuroscience. This year we also <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">approached the area of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">mental health. Girls in STEM, which was our summer project, took place in June <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">August, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">consisted of a conference and three workshops <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">with <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">activities in which girls between the ages of 10 <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">14 were invited to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">conduct <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">real experiments.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">When it comes to the tangible effects of the lack of representation of women in science, Marina Suvac says she has <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">experienced them herself<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;In the 9th grade, I went to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">a<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> high school where <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">achievement was measured based on how pupils din in the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Olympiad <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">competitions<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, mainly, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">science, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">but <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">in my class at the time, there were <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">only <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">five girls out of 21 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">pupils<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. It was a computer science and chemistry class.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The events organi<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ed by Girl Up Neuroscience were attended by Romanian women who graduated from sciences faculties or <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">who <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">work in STEM fields in Romania and abroad. In addition to conferences, webinars and workshops with dozens of experiments, the Girl Up Neuroscience team, made up of over two hundred high school students who work as volunteers, published numerous explanatory articles on the website. Among the topics addressed are emotional intelligence, the effects of trauma, the dopamine circuit, neurodiversity, but also themes that address gender equality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">A <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">survey conducted in <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">2021 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">in<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> seven countries found that parents&#8217; gender stereotypes could also play a role in perpetuating gender inequality in STEM fields. According to the responses, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">parents surveyed were six times more likely to <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">picture of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> a man when asked to think of a scientist (85%) and more than eight times more likely <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">when asked to think<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> of an engineer (89%).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Worldwide, UNESCO statistics show that women make up only a third of scientific researchers, and that this proportion has remained stable over the past decade.
