An unusual winter episode is wreaking havoc in Romania. In Giurgiu, in the south, a tree knocked down by the wind fell on internet cables and a fire broke out on an electricity pole following storms and freezing rain and snowfall. In Dolj, in the south-west, the wind scattered sulfur powder, slag and ash from a warehouse, into the atmosphere. The mountainous areas in the neighboring counties of Gorj and V\u00e2lcea are still affected by strong winds and blizzard snow, according to representatives of the Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges. Road workers say they will use anti-skid material when the blizzard stops and continue to call on drivers not to set off on the road if their cars are not properly equipped and to immediately report any problems. In Neam\u021b, in the northeast, the roof of a block of flats was torn off by the strong wind and fell on a parked car. A tree was blown down by the wind onto the road, and traffic in the area was restricted. Several cars skidded due to the ice.<\/p>\n

Road traffic in the county unfolds in winter conditions on several road sectors, after it snowed overnight. In the Black Sea city of Constan\u021ba a fishing boat capsized in the Danube. Across the country, thousands of homes in dozens of localities were left without electricity for hours, due to the weather. In Bucharest, also due to the unfavorable weather, the Presidential Administration decided to cancel, last Sunday, the popular event, inaugurated by the interim head of state, Ilie Bolojan, dubbed “Open Gates at Cotroceni Palace”, thanks to which citizens can visit the presidential headquarters.<\/p>\n

Romania has been facing, for several days, winter-like meteorological phenomena, rarely encountered in April. Meteorologists announce that the weather will remain particularly cold throughout the country until the end of this week, with minimum night temperatures that can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius in low areas. There is already a new layer of snow, of 10-20 centimeters in the mountains and 5-10 centimeters in the east of the country. Radio Romania correspondents in the counties report that, everywhere, farmers fear that the sudden drop in temperature and the severe frost of recent days have seriously affected the fruit tree orchards, already blooming during the warm period of March. In some areas, the temperature reached 22 degrees Celsius, then dropped to minus 6. Specialists say that serious problems are very likely to arise, especially in plum, cherry, sour cherry, peach and apricot orchards. For now, fruit growers cannot make a decision, they are waiting for the Meteorological Institute to announce if there will be plus temperatures and they say that only then will we be able to calculate the extent of the damage.
