The Ukrainian security
\nsituation has entered a new stage, after on Monday evening, EET, the Russian
\nPresident, Vladimir Putin, signed the decrees recognizing the independence of
\nthe so-called separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.<\/p>\n

The international community
\nwas quick to react. <\/p>\n
\n

The President of Romania,
\nKlaus Iohannis<\/b> wrote on his Facebook page: Romania firmly
\ncondemns the recognition by the Russian Federation of the ‘independence’ of the
\nself-declared separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, which are part of
\nUkraine. This act is a blatant violation of international law, of Ukraine’s sovereignty
\nand territorial integrity. Russia is breaching its obligations as a signatory
\nto the Minsk Agreements and is threatening, through its actions, global peace and security. Romania reiterates
\nits firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will take
\naction in coordination with its partners and allies to implement the appropriate
\nresponse measures. The international community must firmly, immediately and
\nunequivocally sanction this responsibility-lacking decision made by Russia!<\/p>\n

In his turn Romania’s PM,
\nNicolae Ciuca<\/b> has condemned Vladimir Putin’s decision to recognize the independence
\nof the separatist ‘republics’ in eastern Ukraine: We firmly condemn any
\nattempt to call into question Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and
\nindependence. To question the statehood of a UN member state is tantamount to a
\nrevisionist approach that threatens peace and stability in Europe and around
\nthe world.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The President of the European
\nCommission, Ursula von der Leyen<\/b>, also wrote in a message on
\nTwitter: The recognition of the two separatist territories in
\n#Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law, the territorial integrity
\nof Ukraine and the #Minsk agreements. The EU and its partners will react with
\nunity, firmness and with determination in solidarity with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The White House Press
\nSecretary Jen Psak<\/b>i, has also made a statement on the Russian Announcement on
\nEastern Ukraine, posted on the White House website: We have anticipated a move
\nlike this from Russia and are ready to respond immediately. President Biden
\nwill soon issue an Executive Order that will prohibit new investment, trade,
\nand financing by U.S. persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions
\nof Ukraine. This E.O. will also provide authority to impose sanctions on any
\nperson determined to operate in those areas of Ukraine. The Departments of
\nState and Treasury will have additional details shortly. We will also soon
\nannounce additional measures related to today’s blatant violation of Russia’s
\ninternational commitments.<\/p>\n

To be clear: these measures
\nare separate from and would be in addition to the swift and severe economic measures
\nwe have been preparing in coordination with Allies and partners should Russia
\nfurther invade Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\nconsult with Allies and partners, including Ukraine, on next steps and on
\nRussia’s ongoing escalation along the border with Ukraine. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The French President, Emmanuel
\nMacron<\/b> posted on Twitter: By recognizing the separatist regions
\nin eastern Ukraine, Russia is violating its commitments and undermining Ukraine’s
\nsovereignty. I condemn this decision. I have asked for an emergency meeting of
\nthe UN Security Council and European sanctions. <\/p>\n

The UK Foreign Secretary Liz
\nTruss<\/b> wrote on Twitter: Tomorrow we will be announcing new
\nsanctions on Russia in response to their breach of international law and attack

In his turn, German foreign
\nminister Christian Lindner<\/b> said in his message on Twitter: By breaking
\ninternational law, Putin is isolating himself, to the detriment of the Russian people. It will result in NATO and the EU getting closer as communities of values.
