The measures include an increase in VAT and excise duties, health contributions for pensions over \u20ac600, a freeze on pensions and salaries in the public sector, and restrictions on bonuses and government hiring. In education, the teaching load for teachers is higher. At the same time, hourly pay and scholarship funds have been reduced, so there will be fewer beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PROTEST \u2013<\/strong> Trade unionists in the Romanian education sector protested on Friday in front of the Education Ministry for the third day in a row, demanding the resignation of Minister Daniel David. In their opinion, the government is causing \u201can unprecedented crisis in the last 35 years\u201d in the education system, and the measures in the fiscal package for which the government has taken responsibility will also affect the education system. According to union members, the measures that are \u201cseverely affecting\u201d education in Romania include the increase in teaching hours by two hours, the merging of hundreds of educational institutions, which, in their opinion, will lead to layoffs of auxiliary teaching and even administrative staff, and the reduction in hourly pay rates. Trade unionists have announced that on September 8, the first day of the new school year, over 30,000 union members will participate in the \u201cEducation Rally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PENSIONS <\/strong>\u2013 President Nicu\u0219or Dan, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and Justice Minister Radu Marinescu on Friday discussed the Prime Minister&#8217;s proposals to modify the retirement age and pensions for magistrates with representatives of magistrates. The meeting took place in the context of criticism and attacks from the judicial system generated by the changes announced by Prime Minister Bolojan. These include increasing the retirement age for magistrates to 65 years, increasing the length of service from 25 to 35 years and limiting the pension to a maximum of 70% of the net salary, compared to 80% of the gross salary at present. The Prime Minister&#8217;s announcement was met with a harsh reaction from the Supreme Council of Justice, which accused the measures of \u201cblatantly violating the principles of the Constitution\u201d. At the same time, four professional associations of magistrates claim that the project is an \u201cirresponsible and disloyal attempt at constitutional change\u201d and rejected the \u201cconstant campaign to denigrate and discredit the judicial system\u201d, which aims to \u201cviolently and irreversibly destabilize the judiciary\u201d. Also on Friday, Nicu\u0219or Dan signed the retirement decrees for 73 magistrates, including the president of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Corina-Alina Corbu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>RESERVES<\/strong> \u2013 The foreign exchange reserves of the National Bank of Romania totaled \u20ac63.225 billion at the end of July 2025, up by 8.5% compared to the euro level recorded on June 30, 2025, according to a press release published by the Central Bank. The level of the gold reserve remained at 103.6 tons. Given the evolution of international prices, its value stood at \u20ac9.639 billion. Romania&#8217;s international reserves (currency plus gold) as of July 31, 2025 were \u20ac72.864 billion, compared to \u20ac67.627 billion on June 30, 2025. Large foreign exchange reserves can contribute to reducing financing costs for the state, as they represent a guarantee that Romania can honor its external obligations, but these costs are also influenced by other important factors such as budgetary discipline. Failure to meet deficit targets assumed over several years reduces the confidence of investors and international financial markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FOOTBALL<\/strong> &#8211; Romania\u2019s vice-champions CFR Cluj qualified to the third preliminary round of Europa League after defeating Swiss team FC Lugano 1-0 at the end of extra time on Thursday evening at home in the second leg of the second qualifying round. The first leg ended in a goalless draw. In the next round, Cluj will face Sporting Braga from Portugal. Universitatea Craiova also qualified to the third qualifying round of Conference League after defeating Bosnian team FK Sarajevo 4-0 at home in the second leg of the second qualifying round. In the first leg, in Bosnia, Sarajevo won 2-1. Craiova will now play against Slovakian team Spartak Trnava. Also in Conference League, Universitatea Cluj was eliminated by FC Ararat-Armenia, which won 2-1 after extra time on Thursday evening in Sibiu in the second leg of the second qualifying round. In Armenia, the score was 0-0. On Wednesday, Romanian champions FCSB were also defeated, losing 1-2 in Bucharest to North Macedonian team KF Shkendija, who had also won the first leg 1-0. However, FCSB will continue in Europa League, where they will face Kosovo champions FC Drita.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SWIMMING<\/strong> \u2013 Romanian swimmer David Popovici is the new world champion in the 100m freestyle event after defeating his opponents on Thursday at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. He finished the race in 46.51 seconds. On Tuesday, also in Singapore, David Popovici won the gold medal in the 200m freestyle event.
