\nMarch, Romania officially became a NATO member when it deposited the
\ninstruments of ratification with the US State Department, which is
\nthe depository of the North Atlantic Treaty. Established in 1949, the
\norganisation has as its main objective the application of a defence
\nsystem against external attacks.

\na statement issued on Romania’s anniversary of 18 years of NATO
\nmembership, the country’s president Klaus Iohannis underlined the
\nimportance of the status of NATO member, which, he said, is all
\nthe more evident in the current special security context generated by
\nthe illegal military aggression of the Russian Federation against
\nUkraine. Iohannis also said in his statement that this aggression
\nonce more highlighted the Alliance’s capacity to adapt quickly and
\nact promptly and efficiently, owing to the cohesion between member
\nstates and unified decision making. He
\nwent on to say that Romania has been and continues to be deeply
\ninvolved in NATO’s adaptation, both
\nthrough substantial contributions to the reflection processes taking
\nplace in an allied framework and through
\nconstant efforts on a
\nnational level.

\nPresident
\nIohannis reiterated that Romania would act towards strengthening its
\ndefence capacity, including by increasing defence spending from 2 to
\n2.5%
\nof GDP, the modernisation of its forces, adaption to the legislative
\nframework in the field of security and defence and other appropriate
\nmeasures. Bucharest will
\nalso continue to promote the partnership between NATO and the
\nEuropean Union, and will remain a strong ally, a provider of security
\nin the Black Sea region and a determined supporter of the
\nconsolidation of the trans-Atlantic relationship, as well as firmly
\ncommitted to the fundamental values of the North Atlantic Alliance,
\nthe Romanian president also said.<\/p>\n

\nCiuc\u0103 said NATO is the strongest security guarantee for Romania in
\nwhat he said was a dangerous context created by the Russian
\naggression in Ukraine. The
\nappreciation expressed over time from the other allied states
\nconfirms the trust enjoyed by Romania within the Alliance and the
\nhigh level of training, commitment and courage of Romanian army

\ndefence minister Vasile D\u00eencu also issued a statement on Romania’s
\nanniversary of 18 years of NATO membership saying his country would
\nincrease its arms production, including drones and mini-submarines in
\na few years’ time. We will manufacture drones in Romania, as
\nwell as mini-submarines, weapons and some armoured vehicles, he
\nsaid, adding that maintenance units for F16 aircraft already exist,
\nsuch as those in Bac\u0103u, in the east of the country. The minister
\nsaid Parliament will probably approve next year an increase in GDP
\ndefence spending and that the strategic document Romania’s Army
