\nbecome tense in Transnistria, a Russian-speaking break-away region in
\nthe east of the Republic of Moldova. A former Soviet republic,
\nMoldova has a majority Romanian-speaking population. In the
\nRussia-controlled region of
\nTransnistria,
\na series of incidents have taken place in the last few days, their
\nauthor unknown, which raise fears of
\na spill-over of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Two
\nexplosions took place in Maiac, where two communications towers of
\nthe radio and tv centre were blown up, no victims being reported. The
\ninterior ministry of the break-away region says two radio
\nmasts that broadcast radio
\nstations from the Russian Federation were damaged. The blasts
\noccurred one day after the headquarters
\nof the security
\nservice in Transnistria’s capital Tiraspol were
\nattacked with grenade launchers. The Moldovan authorities in Chi\u0219in\u0103u
\nconfirmed reports of gun fire on the border with Ukraine, some two km
\nfrom an arms and munitions depot in Cobasna. Under the circumstances,
\nthe Intelligence and Security Service in the Republic of Moldova said
\nit is
\nkeeping a close eye on the development of the security situation in
\nTransnistria and urged for calm.

The
\nleader of separatist Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky said
\nthe traces of these
\nattacks lead to Ukraine, which, for
\nits part,
\nis
\naccusing
\nMoscow of trying to destabilise Transnistria. Stopping short of
\nblaming Moscow for the explosions, as Kyiv has done, the spokesman
\nfor the US State Department Ned Price said Washington remains
\nconcerned about attempts to escalate tensions. The French foreign

\nterritorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova in the face of
\ndestabilisation

\nBucharest, the defence ministry said the Romanian army does not
\ncurrently have military in the Republic of Moldova, whether for
\nexercises or any other joint training missions. It made this
\nclarification after a Russian-language publication falsely wrote that
\nRomania is planning to attack Transnistria with NATO support, before
\ngoing on to annex the Republic of Moldova, and that it deployed
