Romania’s accession to the passport-free travel area
\nwas the central topic of the talks that Romania’s PM Nicolae Ciuc\u0103 had in
\nBrussels on Wednesday with high-ranking EU and Belgian officials. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
In fact, the theme was approached in all the
\ndiscussions with the president of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, the
\nEuropean Commission chief Ursula von de Leyen, and with Belgium’s PM Alexander
\nDe Croo. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
In his meeting with the president of the European
\nCommission, PM Ciuc\u0103 highlighted the very good conclusions of the recent EU
\nassessment mission, which in his opinion confirms that Romania is prepared to
\njoin Schengen. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Alexander De Croo praised the efforts of the Romanian
\nauthorities and said one last step needed to be taken, an important one for all
\ncitizens. As for Nicolae Ciuc\u0103, he pointed out that Romania took all the
\nnecessary measures to reach its goal. He emphasised that Romania made efforts
\nto meet all technical requirements and standards and that naturally, if
\nnecessary, the Romanian authorities were open to clarifying any points based on
\nthe Commission’s existing approaches and bilaterally, with any EU member
\ncountry interested in finding out more than the Commission’s report mentions. <\/p>\n

At the NATO headquarters, PM Ciuc\u0103 had talks with the
\nAlliance’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg. The latter reiterated that
\nRomania was a valuable Ally, which made important contributions to NATO’s
\nsecurity, and that NATO is ready to protect both Romania, and all its other
\nmembers, in the context of the recent developments in Ukraine, whereby Russia
\nhas turned the Black Sea region into a war zone. Jens
\nStoltenberg also praised Romania’s efforts to support the French-led NATO
\nbattle group in Romania, which comprises troops from the Netherlands and
\nBelgium as well. <\/p>\n

Romania will continue to make active and responsible
\ncontributions to promoting Euro-Atlantic security and stability, and the
\nconsolidation of NATO’s deterrence and defence posture is essential, PM Nicolae
\nCiuc\u0103 said in his turn. Given the dynamic nature of these developments and
\nRussia’s unpredictability, he went on to say, NATO needs to closely monitor the
\nsituation at the Black Sea. This war has unfortunately highlighted what Romania
\nhas been arguing for a long time, namely the strategic relevance of the Black
\nSea to NATO, to the Alliance’s major security interests. <\/p>\n

Apart from Schengen-related matters and the EU’s
\nresponse to Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, PM Nicolae Ciuc\u0103’s talks
\nwith Brussels officials also tackled the strengthening of the Union’s
