The Grand Prize <\/span><\/span>of the 2025 edition of the <\/span><\/span>Bucharest International Film Festival was awarded to the <\/span><\/span>production<\/span><\/span> The President\u2019s Cake<\/i><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> directed by Hasan Hadi. <\/span><\/span>The film also won Tudor Panduru the cinematography award. The a<\/span><\/span>ward for Best Screenplay went to the film <\/span><\/span>One for the Road<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u00a0a film co-written and directed by Francesco Sossai. <\/span><\/span>The<\/span><\/span> Bucharest International Film Festival, <\/span><\/span>which was in its 21<\/span><\/span>st<\/span><\/span><\/sup> edition this year, <\/span><\/span>is the <\/span><\/span>capital city\u2019s<\/span><\/span> only feature film competition, <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>brings to<\/span><\/span>gether <\/span><\/span>new productions, award winners at <\/span><\/span>major festivals around the world, Romanian productions, as well as <\/span><\/span>special<\/span><\/span> events. The festival opened with the screening of the film <\/span><\/span>Baby Teeth <\/i><\/span><\/span>directed by Mihai Mincan, a film <\/span><\/span>first shown internationally a<\/span><\/span>t the Venice International Film Festival. Opening the festival with a Romanian title has already become a tradition, with the 2024 <\/span><\/span>edition<\/span><\/span> being <\/span><\/span>opened<\/span><\/span> by the multi-award-winning <\/span><\/span>New Year That Never <\/i><\/span><\/span>Came<\/i><\/span><\/span>, directed by Bogdan Mure\u0219anu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The 21st edition <\/span><\/span>featured<\/span><\/span> two retrospectives, one dedicated to <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa, and the second to <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Israeli director Nadav Lapid. Both events <\/span><\/span>enjoyed <\/span><\/span>the presence of the <\/span><\/span>two <\/span><\/span>directors, as special guests of the Bucharest International Film Festival. Dana Dimitriu, <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>initiator and director of the <\/span><\/span>festival<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>told us more <\/span><\/span>about the two retrospectives, <\/span><\/span>beginning<\/span><\/span> with <\/span><\/span>that<\/span><\/span> dedicated to Nadav Lapid:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHis<\/span><\/span> most famous films <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Ahed’s Knee<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Synonyms<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>which won <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Yes<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, his most recent <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>work<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which was presented this year at Cannes and recently <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>opened<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> in Paris. Nadav Lapid, one of the most famous Israeli directors, is based in Paris and is a very active militant against the Netanyahu regime and the war in Gaza. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>He speaks about this situation <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>both in his films and in his <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>public statements<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. They are extraordinary films and some of them do<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>n\u2019t make it into the cinema networks,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> which is why <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the festival provides <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>a unique opportunity to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>watch them<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the presence of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>director.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> The second retrospective was dedicated to Sergei Loznitsa, who came to Bucharest with his documentary films <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>State Funeral<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Babi Yar<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> but also with his most recent short film, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Paleontology <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>L<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>esson,<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> which was <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>shown for the first time internationally <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>in Bucharest. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>At the Q&A with the public, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Loznitsa spoke about working on these films <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and the process of making a<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> documentary <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>film<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. The meeting was extraordinary and I am glad that this remarkable director was <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>roduced to the festival public<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. For those <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>not familiar with<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Sergei Loznitsa, he is a graduate of the Moscow Film School <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>before later moving to<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Germany, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the author of remarkable films that pay a kind of homage to Ukraine, criticize Russian propaganda and show the horrors of war. These are films that I would recommend to everyone, films that should be seen by everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The latest edition of the Bucharest International Film Festival also featured two new titles in the Romanian directors section: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Andrei \u0218tefan R\u0103u\u021bu\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span>Night Butterflies<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Claudiu Mitcu\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span>Rusalka<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>. The director of the festival Dana Dimitriu tells us more:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d heard about Andrei \u0218tefan R\u0103u\u021bu’s film and wanted to see it. I found it very interesting that he made a film about a singer I like very much, Marina Voica. Not many young people probably know who she is, but I really liked the warmth of this film and the way in which Andrei \u0218tefan R\u0103u\u021bu speaks about the Romanian pop music of the 1980s, which I believe is a chapter we should know about. Marina Voica was herself invited to attend the screening and that made it a very special evening. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Rusalka<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> is another film I liked, and I like Claudiu Mitcu’s films and projects in general. We wanted to have this film too because it is a great challenge to promote Romanian cinema. And we, at the festival, don’t just promote the latest Romanian productions <\/span><\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span><\/span> the classics, we stage screenings of all kinds of films, because as we know, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to promote films due to financial problems\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bucharest International Film Festival featured also had an event dedicated to one of the most important theatre and cinema actors in Romania, Grigore Vasiliu Birlic. The Media Hall of the Romanian Peasant Museum hosted the screening of the film <\/span><\/span><\/span>Telegrams<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>starring Birlic, which was shown at the <\/span><\/span><\/span>prestigious Cannes International Film Festival in 1960. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The film was <\/span><\/span><\/span>directed by Gheorghe Naghi, <\/span><\/span><\/span>based on <\/span><\/span><\/span>the short stories of I.L. Caragiale <\/span><\/span><\/span>and shows <\/span><\/span><\/span>Birlic <\/span><\/span><\/span>in one of his most exquisite roles. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The <\/span><\/span><\/span>screening<\/span><\/span><\/span> was organi<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>ed in partnership with the Grigore Vasiliu Birlic Cultural Association.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
