Romania’s Parliament on Monday held a special sitting to mark one
\nyear since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February 2022.
\nRomanian senators and deputies condemned the military aggression and
\npromised that Romania would continue to support the neighbouring
\ncountry. The Liberal MP Sorin C\u00eempeanu sent a strong message:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
\nNo country can stay silent. We stand by you and will help you for
\nas long as necessary.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nAnother Liberal MP, Nicoleta Pauliuc, focused on Romania’s
\nimportant role in the current geopolitical context:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nWe have demonstrated that we have embraced the European principles
\nand values, that we are playing an important role in the architecture
\nof the Western world, as a bulwark at the eastern border of the
\nEuropean Union and NATO.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n
\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nHer Social Democrat colleague in the ruling coalition Radu Oprea said
\nNATO and the European Union have boosted their support, something he
\nsaid must continue, and provided a stark reminder:<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nMillions of people have fled the war. More than 3.5 million have
\ncrossed the Romanian border. The Romanian people have welcomed them
\nwith open arms, showing compassion, decency, empathy.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nUkraine’s chance of victory is Europe’s chance with respect to
\ndefending and promoting freedom and democracy, emphasised Turos
\nL\u00f3r\u00e1nd, from the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania:<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nFreedom must be protected, must be defended. The rights violations
\ncommitted by Russia are not restricted to Ukraine’s territory.
\nWe’re dealing in fact with a war against the free world.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nFrom among the opposition parties, Radu Mihail, from the Save Romania
\nUnion, said:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nWe must endorse openly and by vote that Russia is behaving like a
\nterrorist state and that Romania stands in solidarity with the victim
\nterrorised this past year, Ukraine!<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n

\nThe Alliance for the Union of Romanians also
\ncondemned any form of military aggression. However, it also alluded
\nto the situation of the ethnic Romanian minority in Ukraine and the
\nfears about damage to the Danube Delta ecosystem in light of recent
\nreports about Ukrainian plans to dredge
\nthe Bystroye

\nWe can’t just
\nstand by and watch the process of forced assimilation to which the
\nethnic Romanians are subjected to in Ukraine and we can’t ignore
\nthat Ukraine may well destroy the entire Danube Delta out of
\nself-interest.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
\nUkraine’s
\nambassador to Romania Ihor Prokopchuk, who attended the special
\nsitting of the Romanian Parliament, conveyed his country’s
\ngratitude for the support provided by Romania on all levels, adding
