The charismatic doctor went on t<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">o travel all over the world, including to communist Romania in April 1972, on an invitation from the country\u2019s heath ministry. He was famous here, too, having operated on a number of Romanian patients, many of them children, at the hospital in Cape Town. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">During his short stay in this country, Christiaan Barnard visited specialist medical facilities, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">have talks and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> met some of his <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">former <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">patients. A charming and skilled communicator, Barnard also won over the Romanian journalists, and interviews with the doctor appeared in all kinds of publications, from the Communist Party newspapers, to literary and even sports magazines, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">as well as<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">state<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202122;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif, Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> broadcasting media, including Radio Bucharest.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Marius Barnard, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Christiaan<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u2019s brother, would play a significant contribution to improving cardiac surgery standards in Romania. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">He first visited the country in 1977 and returned in the following years to work alongside Romanian doctors, being acknowledged today for his role in the development of cardiac surgery in this country. In 1999, dr.
