Raj Kapoor himself visited Romania in January 1958 to promote his latest film <i>Shree<\/i><i> 420<\/i> and was welcomed with great enthusiasm. <span lang=\"en-US\">The film was <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">praised<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> by the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">local <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">socialist press as <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">a critique of capitalis<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">m, which it <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">saw<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> as morally corrupt, and as a tribute to the ordinary man.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">During his Romanian trip, Raj Kapoor <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">met<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> po<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">liticians,<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">film <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">professionals, as well as <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">school children, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">was taken <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">on trips <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">to the mountains to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">be shown the local attractions. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">He <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">also visited <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the country\u2019s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> new <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Film Production Centre <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">Buftea, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">a <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">brand-new <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">sprawling complex <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">near <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Bucharest. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Like its counterparts in the eastern bloc, t<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">he <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">socialist<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> regime in Romania <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">was<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> fully aware of the extraordinary power of cinema to win hearts and min<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">d<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">it<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> soon began to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">pour huge resources into d<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">eveloping <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the country\u2019s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> film industry, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">with Soviet cinema as a model.
