\nby two seas, the Black Sea to the west and south, and the Sea of Azov
\nto the east, and acting as the border between the western world and
\nthe Pontic-Caspian steppe, Crimea has been a disputed territory for
\ncenturies. Romans, Goths, Byzantines, Cumans and Slavs all wanted to
\ncontrol this much-coveted peninsula. In 2014, Crimea, which was
\nUkrainian territory at the time, was illegally annexed by Russia,
\nwhich eight years later went on to launch a large-scale invasion of
\nneighbouring Ukraine.

Romania,
\nwhich unconditionally supports Ukraine, will maintain its firm
\nposition to condemn and not to recognise the illegal annexation by
\nthe Russian Federation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the
\ncity of Sevastopol, said Romania’s foreign ministry. It also
\nreiterated support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and
\nterritorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
\nThe Romanian foreign office said this annexation represents a strong
\nviolation of international law and the multilateral agreements Russia
\nis part of, including the Charter of the United Nations and the
\nHelsinki Final Act. Romania also condemns the use by the Russian
\narmed forces of the territory of Crimea in the context of Russia’s
\nillegal and unprovoked war of aggression launched against the
\nneighbouring
\nUkraine on 24th
\nFebruary 2022.<\/p>\n

A
\nstatement from the Romanian foreign ministry says Romania reiterates
\nthat it also
\ndoes
\nnot recognise the illegal annexation by the Russian Federation of
\nfour regions in the east of Ukraine, Luhansk,
\nDonetsk,
\nKherson and Zaporizhzhia, which,
\naccording to Bucharest, are an indivisible part of the national
\nterritory of Ukraine under international law. EFE
\nnotes that with the illegal annexation of these four regions last
\nSeptember, Russia has
\ntransformed
\nthe Sea of Azov into its own internal sea, thus ensuring the security
\nof Crimea, which has
\nalso become
\na line of defence.

For
\nits part, Ukraine says it will win back the occupied territory. Since
\n2020, it has marked the Day of Resistance to the
\nOccupation of Crimea and Sevastopol on 26th
\nFebruary, the date of the biggest demonstration to support the
\nintegrity and unity of the Ukrainian state in Simferopol, Crimea’s
\nadministrative centre, in 2014. In August 2021, Kyiv launched the
\nCrimea Platform in an attempt to gather international support to
\nregain the peninsula and which, in the last year, has requested
\nRussia to immediately end hostilities and withdraw its troops from
