Many
\npundits are already talking about a so-called geopolitics of grain developing
\non Ukraine’s western borders. As early as May 2022, the EU had suspended
\ncustoms duties on all products imported from Ukraine. This country’s neighbors
\nreported a massive flow of corn, wheat or sunflower. Granaries were overstocked
\nand local prices plummeted, which sparked farmers’ anger. Romania is the only
\nneighbor of Ukraine to allow grain imports from this country. Poland and
\nSlovakia, two otherwise staunch supporters of Kyiv, have banned Ukrainian grain
\nimports to protect local farmers. According to Radio Romania’s correspondent in
\nSofia, the main reason is that, despite the existence of so-called solidarity
\ncorridors, in the last year Ukraine had difficulties exporting significant
\nvolumes of foodstuffs, which disrupted production and trade chains. <\/p>\n

A
\ntraditionally Russian-friendly country and currently on bitter terms with
\nUkraine, Hungary too banned the imports of honey and certain meats from Ukraine
\nuntil June 30. Romanian farmers, who in turn have protested the current
\nsituation, claim their losses exceed \u20ac200 million due to the imports of
\ncut-rate grain from neighboring Ukraine, which sells at approximately \u20ac100 per
\nton. Facing the growing discontentment of its citizens but also wary of angering
\nBrussels, the Romanian government promises to compensate farmers. Officials
\nhave announced a \u20ac10-milllion package addressing affected farmers. This adds to
\nthe \u20ac10 million disbursed so far by the European Commission, raising total
\nassistance to \u20ac20 million, designed to offset expenses related to stockpiling last
\nyear’s yield. Farmers can file the necessary documents at the Agriculture
\nPayments and Intervention Agency, 15 days after the decision is published in
\nthe Official Gazette. Asked if lawmakers plan on temporarily banning Ukrainian
\ngrain imports, government spokesman Dan C\u0103rbunarusaid
\nRomania has chosen to comply with European legislation, which places it in a
\nposition to bargain. Meanwhile, the European Commission has announced an
\nadditional assistance package for farmers worth \u20ac100 million, which will be
