Government decisions <\/strong><\/p>\n

In today\u2019s meeting, the Government is set to approve a draft decision granting emergency financial aid in agriculture for the fruit\u2011growing sector affected by the late frost in the spring of 2025. The European Commission has adopted a mechanism by means of which Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland and Romania will receive a total of \u20ac49.8 million in exceptional EU support for farmers. According to the explanatory note of the draft, the Union\u2019s expenditure for Romania will not exceed \u20ac11.5 million. The measures take into account the economic losses suffered by affected farmers and ensure that payments do not disrupt the market or competition.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the government will approve the negotiation and signing of the \u201cProtocol amending the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on the technical, financial, legal and organizational aspects related to the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of the cross\u2011border road bridge between the two states, over the Prut River, at Ungheni\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mircea Abrudean on visit to the USA <\/strong><\/p>\n

Romania\u2019s steady contribution to regional security, its firm commitment to protecting the borders of the European Union and NATO, and its fulfillment of all obligations assumed within the North Atlantic Alliance were highlighted on Wednesday by Senate Speaker, Mircea Abrudean, during his meeting with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson.<\/p>\n

The importance of maintaining US political support for the security of NATO\u2019s Eastern Flank and for strengthening stability in the Black Sea region was also emphasized. \u201cThe strategic partnership with the United States is a central pillar of Romania\u2019s defense strategy. It is the foundation on which we build measurable results not only in securing borders and protecting NATO\u2019s Eastern Flank, but also in the economy, by expanding cooperation in other areas of interest such as the defence industry, energy or innovative technologies\u201d, Mircea Abrudean said. The Romanian official is attending, the Inter\u2011Parliamentary Security Forum, held over February 3\u20136 in Washington.<\/p>\n

Economic recovery measures <\/strong><\/p>\n

Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare is today presenting a substantial package of economic recovery measures. According to him, the focus is shifting from a consumption\u2011based economy to one driven by massive investment and added value, as Romania needs a predictable and responsible framework that stimulates investment, competitiveness and the creation of sustainable jobs.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the project will also be discussed with the social partners in the Tripartite Council, announced Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who stated that the difficult period of budgetary adjustment has ended and Romania is entering the phase of economic re-launch.<\/p>\n

Annulment of the 2024 presidential elections <\/strong><\/p>\n

Romania is a strong democracy, and the decision to annul the presidential elections scheduled for the end of 2024 was an internal legal act aimed at protecting constitutional order in the face of an asymmetric threat, President Nicu\u015for Dan states. The decision, he adds, was based on assessments by national security institutions and on the authority of the Constitutional Court. Responding to the preliminary report of the Legal Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, which refers to alleged interference by the European Commission in electoral processes within EU member states, the president says that the references concerning Romania are strictly contextual. Nicu\u015for Dan maintains that Romania\u2019s commitment to the rule of law, transparency, freedom of expression and the integrity of electoral processes remains unwavering.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pension contributions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romania\u2019s contribution to the second pension pillar is expected to rise to 5.25% this year and to 6% next year, according to a draft law tacitly adopted by the Senate. The initiators \u2013 deputies from the National Liberal Party, which is part of the governing coalition \u2013 noted that over the past 15 years, economic and financial crises have led successive governments to postpone the annual increases in individual contributions to this pillar, even though demographic forecasts consistently showed that, after 2030, the state pension system (Pillar 1) would face major difficulties in ensuring a decent replacement rate of salary through pensions.<\/p>\n

They also stressed that Pillar 2 requires strong support, given that a very large number of people will begin claiming these rights in approximately 5 to 10 years. The draft law will now be sent to the Chamber of Deputies, which has the final say.<\/p>\n

Romania at the IISA Championships <\/strong><\/p>\n

Romanian athletes won seven more medals on Wednesday at the European Ice Swimming Championships in Molveno, Italy: three gold, one silver and three bronze. Aissia Prisecariu took gold in the 100 m backstroke, Vladimir Romaniuc in the 50 m breaststroke, and Andrei Enache won the 250 m freestyle. After two days of competition, Romania\u2019s tally stands at 10 medals: 4 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze.<\/p>\n

Matches at the Transylvania Open <\/strong><\/p>\n

British tennis player Emma R\u0103ducanu, the top seed, qualified on Wednesday evening for the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open (WTA 250), an event with total prize money of over 283,000 dollars hosted in Cluj\u2011Napoca, after defeating Slovenia\u2019s Kaja Juvan 7\u20115, 6\u20111. In the quarterfinals, the Romanian\u2011born player will face Poland\u2019s Maja Chwalinska, who came through the qualifiers. Romanian Sorana C\u00eerstea also reached the quarterfinals, beating Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 6\u20111, 6\u20110. Romanians Jaqueline Cristian and Gabriela Ruse qualified for the doubles semifinals after a 6\u20112, 7\u20115 win over Eudice Chong (Hong Kong) and En\u2011Shuo Liang (Taiwan).
