US President Donald Trump chaired, in Washington, the first meeting of his Board of Peace, an organisation established to oversee a Gaza cease-fire and initiate the reconstruction process. Among the main issues that could test the council’s effectiveness in the coming months, Reuters reports, are the disarmament of Hamas militias and the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the size of the reconstruction fund and the flow of humanitarian aid to the war-affected population of Gaza.<\/p>\n

In his speech, the US leader said that several countries, mostly from the Gulf Area, have pledged over 7 billion dollars for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. Contributors include Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Kuwait, he said. The US contribution will be 10 billion, and the UN is collecting 2 billion in aid. Indonesia will assume the role of deputy commander of the future stabilization force in Gaza and has pledged 8,000 soldiers for it. This force will be commanded by the United States and could reach 20,000 soldiers.<\/p>\n

Romania attended the meeting as an observer, being represented by President Nicu\u0219or Dan. In his intervention, the Romanian head of state praised the peace plan for Gaza drawn up by the US president as “exhaustive and stable”. Nicusor Dan explained what Romania can do in this context. Regarding the humanitarian situation, Bucharest is ready to increase the number of flights to evacuate sick children from Gaza, in order to treat them in Romanian hospitals. In addition to medical support, Romania offers its expertise in the field of emergency interventions. The head of state showed that Romania can contribute to the reconstruction of essential services affected by the conflict, such as ambulance and fire services. Romania is also willing to support the educational sector in Gaza, both by expanding scholarship programs for Palestinian students and by getting involved in the reconstruction of school infrastructure.<\/p>\n

A central element of the intervention, however, aimed at institutional reconstruction, which Nicusor Dan described as essential for long-term stability. Romania, he said, has experience in supporting the consolidation of institutions in other regions of the world. Finally, the president stressed that Romania has traditionally good relations with both the Israelis and the Palestinians, which can represent an advantage in the reconstruction process and dialogue. France Presse notes that both the United States’ major traditional allies and major rivals have refused to be part of the Board of Peace, a controversial project that has raised fears that it aims to replace the United Nations. According to experts, its credibility will quickly collapse if it does not produce rapid and concrete results, especially in the humanitarian field.
