Located at the intersection of spectacular reliefs, the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park is the largest in Romania, a true sanctuary of biodiversity. It is an exceptional destination, chosen annually by thousands of tourists for its landscapes, which can be explored by following approved trails. These reveal rare geological phenomena, isolated hamlets on peaks, or thermal caves. In addition, one can admire a precious endemic flora, symbolized by the famous Black Banat Pine.<\/p>\n
To better understand the profile and importance of this space, we spoke with Mariana P\u0103s\u0103rin, from the administration of the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park, responsible for community relations and ecological education.<\/p>\n
“It is the largest national park in Romania, with an area of 61,660 hectares, spread over the territory of four counties: Gorj (the largest share), Cara\u0219-Severin, Mehedin\u021bi, and a very small portion of Hunedoara. Tourists come here primarily for the extraordinary biodiversity and spectacular landscapes: gorges, limestone cliffs, canyons crossed by streams with fluctuating flow and caves. We have flora rarities, such as the Black Banat Pine, an endemic and emblematic species for our park, found exclusively in this area. We also find a huge diversity of butterflies – almost 1,500 species, which represents approximately 45% of Romania’s lepidoptera fauna -, but also numerous species of orchids. From a fauna point of view, researchers have identified 31 of the 32 species of bats (chiroptera) existing in Romania here. It is an extremely rich offering for nature lovers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ideal starting point for exploring the protected area is the Visitor Center, located at the exit of the B\u0103ile Herculane resort. Once here, tourists can visit a unique exhibition arranged on three levels, where they can also admire models of thermal caves \u2013 a speleological phenomenon unique at the national level. Informed about the possibilities in the field, visitors can choose from a wide range of activities. \u201cThis diversity is also reflected in the forms of tourism that we can practice: mountain hiking on the numerous available trails, climbing on the climbing walls, but also canyoning, there are even specialized schools that organize annual courses here. Tourists who want an authentic experience can visit the isolated hamlets in the Cerna Mountains, where they can interact with the locals, taste traditional products, and participate in daily household activities. Even though we do not have areas specially designed for birdwatching, species can be easily observed in their natural environment. Numerous researchers and photography enthusiasts come specifically to the park to immortalize and monitor the special species of flora and fauna.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a truly unique experience, more and more tourists are choosing to leave the urban agglomeration behind and head to the heights of the Cerna Mountains. Here, beyond the comforts specific to the 21st century, one discovers settlements where time seems to have stood still, and the silence is complete. Mariana P\u0103s\u0103rin explains why a visit to these areas represents a return to the origins.<\/p>\n
\u201cHamlets are extremely small settlements, with only a few homes, to which motorized access is difficult or impossible. A famous example is the hamlet of Inele\u021b, which can be reached by climbing wooden stairs fixed directly to the rock. There is also a bypass route, accessible only on horseback. Nowadays, it seems incredible that there are still areas so cut off from civilization, where people live in perfect harmony with the rhythm of nature. Although their lives are not easy at all, the locals have adapted to the growing number of tourists eager for peace and quiet. Now, some of them offer rustic accommodations in their own homes, prepare traditional food and organize campfires.\u201d<\/p>\n
Beyond the tranquility of the hamlets, the area’s human heritage is supported with remarkable efforts. In the spa resort of B\u0103ile Herculane, for example, there is an interactive museum, where tourists can learn old crafts, such as weaving the ie, <\/i>the traditional peasant blouse. In turn, the administration of the protected area is actively involved in capitalizing on these traditions, organizing annual thematic events, as emphasized by Mariana P\u0103s\u0103rin, from the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park Administration, responsible for community relations and ecological education.<\/p>\n
“The park administration organizes two major events. The first is called “Go\u0219ti la Givan” (a Banat expression meaning “guests at the table” or “seated”). It usually takes place in spring. This year it was scheduled for April 18, at our visitor center. The event features local producers, craftsmen \u2013 including the lady who weaves them, as well as a potter who gives live demonstrations and invites children to sculpt clay. We also have artistic moments supported by students from schools within the park. The second event is the Banat Black Pine Festival, which this year reaches its 21st edition. We celebrate our emblematic tree, but we also mark National Park Day. It always takes place on the last weekend of May, in correlation with the European Parks Day (on May 24). It is a large-scale festival, organized in the summer garden of the B\u0103ile Herculane spa resort, where music and dance performances are held, supported by both local ensembles and guests from the rest of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
All this rich tourist offering is complemented by the area’s strongly negatively ionized air, similar to that of the Swiss Alps. The combination of spa tourism, historical heritage, and the wilderness of the relief transforms the park into a major attraction on the European map, a destination that constantly fascinates the international public. The protected area attracts guests from all over the world, from tourists from Germany, Spain, or France, to visitors from the United States and Australia. They, including those coming from countries with a vast mountain tradition, such as Switzerland, are deeply impressed by the local hospitality and the wilderness of the landscapes. A major attraction for foreigners is the approximately 10,000 hectares of ancient beech forests, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2017.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
