There are many adventure parks in Romania and they provide entertainment for both thrill seekers and families with children. Obstacle courses, zip lines, rock climbing, paintball, treasure hunt and even military training are some of the activities available in these parks.
Our first stop today is the tourist and historical city of Sibiu, in the heart of Transylvania. A former European capital of culture, Sibiu hosts many dance, theatre and music festivals, so at certain times of the year the city is teeming with visitors. In autumn, when it is not so busy, Sibiu is perfect for a quiet walk around its century-old cobbled streets.
The nearby resort of Paltinis lies 30 km from Sibiu and this is where we find Arca Parc, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, in the middle of a spruce forest. The manager of this adventure park, Florentina Pribeagu, says the activities provided here include tree climbing, zip lines and dynamic games and are perfect for families with children and groups of friends and colleagues:
"The park opened in the spring of 2013. It stretches across 1 and a half hectares of land and provides 10 different tree climbing routes for both children and adults, including 130 games and four zip line courses with varying degrees of difficulty to cover all ages. The routes are distinguished by colour. Apart from the basic activity provided by the park, namely tree climbing, we offer other types of activities and programmes as well. For example, we have special programmes for schools and nursery schools and also host children's parties. Winter activities include tubing and sledding. Accommodation is no problem, as there are many guest houses and hotels in Paltinis. Apart from Romanian visitors, we also have many foreign visitors coming from all corners of the world, from countries like Germany, France, Italy, Britain, Belgium, the US, Canada and Tunisia. We recently even had visitors from Mexico."
For our next destination we will travel 186 km east of Sibiu to Harghita Spa. This resort is particularly popular in winter. You can ski here four months a year, from December to March and there are seven ski pistes in the area. One of the attractions of the region is the Balu Adventure Park, located at an altitude of 1,400 metres. The park guarantees an unforgettable experience, says Kristaly Peter, a management representative:
"We have a zip line that runs across a 1,000 m lake. 150 different games are available and there's also a skating rink and a snowtubing track, as well as ski pistes of up to 7,300 metres in length serviced by four ski chairs. The park opens at 9 am and closes at 4 pm in winter. Our zip line is unique and provides a truly unforgettable experience. Some visitors prefer to come in summer, others in winter. We offer 2 and 3 day packages around Christmas and New Year's Eve.
And if you seek even more adventure, we invite you to central-western Romania, in the Orastie area. Spreading across 88 hectares, Arsenal Park is a military-themed park which entertains its guests with paintball and airsoft games, a military museum and a modern spa centre. According to Olav Bagyo, event manager, this theme park offers a unique blend of relaxation, adrenaline, adventure and outdoor fun:
"This old ammunition factory and military unit has been turned into a theme park. At present we can accommodate 208 people, we have a very large spa centre, which includes an indoor and an outdoor pool, beauty salon, a gym and four saunas. The activities we organise here range from live ammunition shooting practice to military simulations using airsoft guns, paintball, military drills, rides by military vehicles on tracks and so on."
The accommodation is equally spectacular. Three four-star villas, each with two bedrooms, hydro massage bathtubs, a dining room and a luxurious living room. Olav Bagyo, event manager with Arsenal Park, tells us more about the themed accommodation facilities:
"I would recommend the cannon rooms and the TAB rooms. Each cannon room has an actual field cannon in it, with the barrel sticking out of the window, and the bed arranged on the gun carriage. The TAB rooms include cross-sections of the Romanian-design armoured personnel carrier known as TAB. Each half of a TAB is fixed on a room, and inside it there is the bed. Each accommodation facility is different in our compound, and has its own design. The restaurant itself is a museum, with a variety of items on display. The entire park is, in fact, an outdoor military museum. We have at least 150 items of military technology, ranging from TAB vehicles, anti-aircraft machine guns, cannon, tanks, minelayers, helicopters and aircraft."
New Year's Eve packages in Arsenal Park cover accommodation between December 30 and January 2. The price, 115 euros per person, covers accommodation in the so-called "officers' rooms," full board, New Year's Eve dinner, as well as access to the skating rink and the sports grounds.
