Tennis Player Irina Begu
South Korea' s capital city Seoul last week played host to a notable WTA tennis tournament, with 426, 750 dollars prize money up for grabs. Taking part in the event were several top-flight tennis players, among whom Mona Barthel and Julia Goerges from Germany, Magdalena Rybarikova and Anna Schmiedlova from Slovakia, as well as Varvara Lepchenko and Sloane Stephens from the United States.
Number one favorite tennis player to winning the tournament in Seoul was Irina Camelia Begu. Joining her for the main draw were two other Romanians, Andreea Mitu and Alexandra Dulgheru, who were eliminated from the very first round of the competition.
Begu was in top shape and so she succeeded in winning the competition. In the first round, she outclassed Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova, 6-2, 6-4. Then in the second round Begu had a hard time snatching a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 win against Polona Hercog of Slovenia. In the quarterfinals, the Romanian overpowered Swedish challenger Johanna Larson, 6-4, 7-5. Then in the semifinals, Begu was up against Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck whom she had an easy time defeating, 6-0, 6-2. In the finals, the Romanian secured a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alexandra Sasnovitch of the Belarus, a tennis player who had come straight from the qualifiers.
Thanks to her win in Seoul, Begu skipped three WTA notches, from the 29th to the 26th position, her career-best so far, a reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate the Romanian player the Athlete of the Week.
Irina Begu was born in Bucharest on August 26, 1990. Her first notable performance occurred in 2006, when she won the European title in the under-16 category. Then she moved closer to the world standings year by year, and in 2011 she earned a position among the world's top 40 players.
Apart from the Seoul tournament, Irina's record so far includes a WTA singles tournament she won in September 2012 in Tashkent and four other doubles tournaments, among which the one in Hobart in 2012, the 's-Hertogenbosch tournament in 2014 and two other tournaments in Rio de Janeiro and Seoul, in 2014.
