Romanian tennis has these days
become center-stage at world level. At the ATP tournament in Rotterdam, with
almost two million dollars in prize money, the Romanian-Dutch pair made of
Horia Tecau and Jean Julien Rojer reached as far as the finals. Tecau and
Rojer's trail in the aforementioned tournament included a 6-3, 6-4 first-round
win against the Georgian - Australian pair made of Nikoloz Basilashvili and
Matthew Ebden. It was Tecau and Rojer's first win in 2019.
Then in the
quarterfinals, Tecau and Rojer grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 win against the Dutch-Austrian
pair made of Wesley Koolhof and Jurgen Melzer. Tecau and Rojer succeeded a
hard-fought win in the semifinal they played against the US - British pair made
of Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, 3-6, 6-2 and 10-7 in super-tie break.
In the final, the Romanian-Dutch
pair sustained a 6-7, 6-7 defeat by the French
- Finnish pair made of Jeremy Chardy and Henri Kontinen.
Notwithstanding, Horia Tecau's reaching as far as the finals in Rotterdam
prompted Radio Romania International to designate him the Athlete of the Week.
Horia Tecau was born on January 19,
1985 in Brasov. He has been playing tennis ever since he was seven. In 2002,
Tecau was a juniors' men's doubles champion in Wimbledon, jointly with Florin
Mergea. Horia Tecau turned pro in 2003. Since 2008, he has been placed among
the doubles rankings' top 100 players, and among the world's top 50 tennis players
since November 2009.
Ever since, Tecau's ascension in the doubles rankings has
been a constant one. In November 2015, Tecau and Jean Julien Rojer won the
Champions Tour in London, which earned him the 2nd position in the
doubles tennis players rankings at world level.
In Rotterdam, Horia Tecau played the 55th
