Romanian tennis player Simona Halep
Romanian women’s tennis team this past weekend was only a whisker away from succeeding an exceptionable feat. In their FedCup confrontation hosted by the French city of Rouen, the Romanians sustained a 2-3 defeat by the French team. The doubles game was the crucial confrontation, since Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic defeated Simona Halep and Monica Niculescu in three sets. Before the doubles match, the score was 2-all, as Simona Halep earned the required number of points for Romania.
Simona’s strong wish to win persuaded the Romanian team’s non-playing captain Florin Segarceanu to use Halep for the doubles match as well. In effect, Simona was on the tennis court for 6 hours. For the dedication with which she played against France in Rouen, Radio Romania International has designated Simona the Athlete of the Week.
Simona Halep is WTA 2nd-placed at the moment. She was at the top of the WTA standings 64 weeks. Her career so far includes 18 wins in WTA tournaments, of which one is the Grand Slam tournament in Roland Garros in 2018. Born on September 27, 1991 in Constanta, Simona Halep turned pro in 2006, when she played her first ITF matches. In 2010, Halep earned her place among the world’s top 100 players.
In August 2014, Halep reached as far as the 2nd place according to the WTA rankings, the highest position ever for a Romanian tennis player at that time. In October 2017 Halep succeeded to be at the top of the WTA rankings, until January 2018. Simona reclaimed her No. 1 position also in 2018, in February. Halep maintained her WTA 1st-place until early 2019, after the Australian Open.
