Romanian footballer Alexandru Mitriţă has
scored the fastest goal in the history of New York City Football Club, on Saturday, in a
game of the North-American professional league, Major League Soccer. New York
clinched a 4-0 win against Football Club Cincinnati. Mitrita put the New
Yorkers into the lead 30 seconds into the game. The Romanian played 86 minutes
and added a second in the game's 43rd minute. These are his first
goals in the present season with 9 games played. For his performance on
Saturday, Radio Romania International has designated Alexandru Mitrita athlete
of the week.
His performance in the game against
Cincinnati has been the fastest goal scored in Major League Soccer in the past
year. On September 14th last year, Cincinnati's Allan Cruz scored
against Montreal Impact 28 seconds after the kick-off. However, the fastest
goal in the history of the American league was scored by Mike Grella on October
18th, 2015 for New York Red Bulls, in the eighth second of their
match against Philadelphia Union.
Mitriță was born in Craiova, on February 8th 1995 and made his debut
at Gaz Metan Turnu Severin in 2011. In 2013 he signed up with Viitorul
Constanța and after two years with the Italian side Pescara. In 2017 he came
back to Romania on loan at Universitatea Craiova, which hired him after one
year in exchange for 730 thousand euros and 15% out of a further transfer. A
year later he joined New York City Football Club. According to newspapers, his
transfer stood at over 9 million dollars.
Mitriță made his debut with Romania's football national side in a friendly
against Israel in 2018. He scored twice for the national side in eleven games
and won caps for other games. On October 8th, with coach Mirel Radoi
at helm, Romania's national eleven will be up against Iceland in an away game
counting towards the Euro 2020 play-off. In the Nations League, the Romanians will be
playing in Norway on 11th October and three days later they will be
taking on Austria at home.
