Eliza Bucheschi shines at the European Championship in France
The European Handball championship is underway in France. The last few games left to play as part of the main group phase will decide who will advance to the semi-finals. We already know the name of the first team - Russia, who already won Group 1, ahead of the last game. In the second group, Romania still holds chances of securing one of the top two positions that guarantees a spot in the semi-finals, despite losing the first game against the Netherlands, 24-29. Romania put on a poor display of handball, considering it clinched easy wins against the Czech Republic, Germany and Norway in the preliminary group phase.
In the match against the Netherlands the top scorer for Romania was Eliza Buceschi. In fact, she has been one of Romania's top performers in this year's championship, with 32 goals in four matches. For her remarkable run at the European Championship, we have designated Eliza Buceschi Athlete of the Week on RRI.
Eliza Buceschi was born in August, 1993 in Baia Mare. She is the daughter of coach Costica Buceschi, who helped her make her debut in professional handball. Aged 19, she was playing for HCM Baia Mare, and became one of the top scorers of the 2011-2012 edition of the domestic championship. At the time she scored 100 goals in the first half of the competition, namely until February 2012, when she had to undergo a right-hand surgery, which kept her away from the field for the remainder of the season.
From Baia Mare Eliza was signed on loan by Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea. She also played for teams abroad, for Thuringer in Germany, then for Midtjylland in Denmark. In 2016 she returned for Romania and played for Dunarea Braila and Corona Brasov. In 2011 she was drafted into Romania's national squad, with which she won the bronze medal at the World Cup in 2015.
