The first half of the play-off/play-out stage of the first Romanian football league has ended with Astra Giurgiu coming first a point ahead Steaua Bucharest
Surprisingly in the latest play-off round Astra ended in a goaless draw their home match against Pandurii Targu Jiu. Astra should be pleased with the result though as they were outnumbered in the second half of the game after Portuguese Filipe Teixeira had been given an early bath on minutes 43 for the second yellow card.
In the second leg, Astra will be taking on Viitorul Constanta in an away game, a side that put on lackluster games in the play-off gaining only 2 points out of a total 15. The leg’s derby will be pitching Steaua Bucharest against archrivals Dinamo, on the national Arena on Sunday night.
We recall the first game on Dinamo’s turf ended in a draw, one-all. CSMS Iasi will be up against CSU Craiova in the play-out, vying for the first place, which will take the winner straight into the Europa League. Iasi has a point more in the standings, after the clear three-nil win in the Sunday’s game against Craiova.
In the wake of the Panama Papers row, the new chair of the International Football Federation, Swiss Gianni Infantino, denied any wrongdoing. His name was being cited in relation to several dubious contracts signed with an offshore company, while he was heading the UEFA’s judicial department. Infantino said in a communiqué that “he was dismayed that his integrity was being doubted”.
