The 10th and final round of the play-off / play-out stage of the Romanian First League came to an end on Wednesday. The last match was played in Timisoara, where the local side Poli held visitors from CSU Craiova to a 2-all draw. Following this result, CSMS Iasi tops the play-out tables with 35 points. Craiova comes next with 33 points. In the play-off phase, Astra Giurgiu won the title, while Steaua Bucharest is runner-up. Both teams will compete in the Champions League preliminaries next season.
In another development, football club Steaua Bucharest can make legal use of its brand and name, the Bucharest Tribunal ruled on Wednesday. The court of law ruled against the notification filed by the Steaua Army Sports Club, who brought to court the team financed by businessman George Becali. The Army claims the new name that was registered includes the Steaua brand, although the court previously ruled that this brand is the property of the Romanian Army. The ruling of the Bucharest Tribunal can be appealed.
In other news from football, Ludogorets Razgrad, the club of three Romanian players, Andrei Prepelita, Claudiu Keseru and Cosmin Moti, has won the Bulgarian Championship for the fifth consecutive time. In a fixture scheduled on Wednesday, Georgi Dermendzhiev’s trainees outperformed Pirin Blagoevgrad 4-1. All three Romanian players scored one goal, while the fourth goal was scored by the Brazilian player Wanderson.
