Two political parties join forces and a new presidential candidate is announced in Romania.
Romania’s Liberals and the Liberal Democrats have created a new party, which will be known by the historical name of the National Liberal Party. The presidential candidate of this new group will be announced at the beginning of August. Vasile Blaga, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, explains:
“The new National Liberal Party is the result of the merger between the Liberal Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party. The platform of the new party is based on the respect for the rule of law and the values of our colleagues from the European People’s Party, namely dignity, justice, freedom and solidarity.”
The leader of the Liberals, Klaus Iohannis, says the new party will help bring right-wing forces in Romania closer together:
“We have created this new party in order to change Romania for the better. Naturally, we want to win the presidential elections, as well as the parliamentary elections in 2016 and lead Romania onto a better path into the next decade.”
Created in 1875, the National Liberal Party is one of the main political groups in Romania. In February 2014, following prime minister Victor Ponta’s refusal to appoint Klaus Iohannis as deputy prime minister, the Liberals walked out of the ruling coalition and entered Opposition.
The Liberal Democratic Party is a centre-right parliamentary party born in 2007 through the merger of the Democratic Party with the Liberal Democratic Party. It was part of the government from 2008 to May 2012, when it went into opposition. While the new National Liberal Party is still to announce its candidate for the presidential elections, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, a junior partner in the ruling coalition, has made public its candidate.
His name is Kelemen Hunor, he is the leader of the party and also ran for president in 2009. Recently, however, he said he would leave the cabinet as of August 1st because the Romanian state has decided to support the European Commission against a citizens’ initiative entitled Minority SafePack, co-written by Kelemen Hunor himself. The Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians has proposed that the positions held by Hunor in the cabinet be taken over by senator Rozalia Biro. If her nomination is accepted by the prime minister and the president, Biro will become the first female deputy prime minister in Romania.
The Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania is a parliamentary group created to defend the rights of the ethnic Hungarian community in this country. Ever since 1996, this party has always had its own candidate for the presidential elections.
