Radio Romania’s Culture Channel hosted its 17th Awards Gala this year.
For 17 years now, Radio Romania Culture is rewarding the best cultural performances of the previous year. In Monday evening’s awards gala a total of three special prizes and nine awards were bestowed for remarkable achievements in film, theatre, poetry, fiction, cultural projects and festivals, education, science, music and the fine arts. The Award of Excellence for 2016 went to Ion Caramitru, actor and director of the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre in Bucharest, also the president of the Theatre Union in Romania. His colleague, Victor Rebengiuc, who delivered the laudatio for this award, spoke of “the enthusiasm, resolve and professionalism that helped him become the great man that he is today”.
The Lux Mundi prize, awarded to people who make their creations known to the entire world, was grabbed by Ada Solomon, the first Romanian producer nominated at the Oscar Awards for best foreign film for her feature Toni Erdmann. A member of the European Film Academy, Ada Solomon also produced Aferim, a film directed by Radu Jude that grabbed the Silver Bear in Berlin. Ada Solomon is also the recipient of a Golden Bear award for Calin Peter Netzer’s Child’s Pose.
Pianist Alexandra Dariescu, who was featured among the world’s top 30 young pianists by International Piano Magazine, grabbed the In memoriam Iosif Sava award. Apart from these three special prizes, another nine awards were bestowed. In the film section, the award went to director Cristi Puiu for his feature Sierra Nevada. Stage director Bobi Pricop and the crew of the show The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, a stage adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel of the same name, was bestowed the award in the theatre section. The prize for best fiction went to Radu Cosasu for his book Life of Fiction after the Revolution, while the prize for best poetry went to Svetlana Carstean for her poetry volume Trado, co-authored by the Swedish poet Athena Farrokhzad.
In the music section, the award went to the band Byron, which celebrated 10 years of existence. In the cultural projects and festivals section, the winner was Garana Jazz Festival, probably the most anticipated jazz event in Romania and a prestigious open-air jazz event at European level. Last year Garana Jazz Festival reached its 20th edition. The award for sicence went to Aurora Simionescu, an astrophysics expert and associate professor with the Japanese Spatial Agency, who expressed her gratitude in a recorded video. The prize in the education section was won by the Bucharest Stock Exchange for launching an extended online platform for financial education. The fine arts award went to Alexandru Antik for his exhibition Visions in the Dark, on show at the Fine Arts Museum in Cluj Napoca, who has recently published his book Inventory.
