can stand real chances to increase the number of athletes who can qualify for
the Tokyo Olympics, The International Olympic Committee has recently approved
new qualifying systems, with important adjustments for athletics, cycling,
weightlifting, basketball and judo. Changes are also in place for the
participation age limit in certain competition disciplines. For instance, the
age limit was raised for the Olympic football tournament to 24, instead of 23.
Mihai Covaliu is the president of the Olympic and Sports Committee. According to the new qualification requirements, some of the Romanian
athletes who have already qualified for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo, may be
ruled out of competition. Mihai Covaliu explains.
"Having qualified, officially, that means you met all the criteria. No
adjusted criterium may subsequently deny you the right to participate, once you
have gained that right. But then again, in football, the athletes who got
through to the Olympic Games scheduled for 2020 were no longer eligible for
participation for the 2021 edition. That is why the criterium was adjusted. And
that, precisely to support what I've said before, once you have qualified, you
cannot be denied that any longer."
regarding the athletes' age limit, those who did not meet the age limit
requirement in 2020 but who, age-wise, perfectly qualify for the 2021 edition of
the Tokyo Olympics, are entitled to taking part in the Olympics. Such is the
case of junior women gymnasts who this year compete in the seniors' category.
As for boxing, participants must be born between 1980 and 2002.
qualifiers' timetable will be set by the international federation as soon as
the ongoing COVID-19 sanitary crisis ends. Qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics
will end by June 29, 2021, while July 5th is the registration
deadline for participation. Competitions will kick-start on July 23rd.
