Romanian Athletes Competing in the Sochi Winter Olympics
One of the leading sports competitions in 2014 is scheduled to get underway this coming weekend: the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Taking part in the competition will also be a Romanian delegation made up of 44 people, 24 of whom are competing athletes, and the other 20 managers and officials.
Romanian Biathlon athlete Eva Tofalvi is the Romanian delegation’s most accomplished participant, since this is the fifth edition of the winter Olympics she takes part in; also, Tofalvi stands the highest chances of earning a good position in the final rankings. Eva’s eventual aim for the present edition is to be ranked among the world’s top 10 athletes, which according to specialists, is quite feasible in her case.
The Romanian delegation has so far walked home with only one medal from the Winter Olympics. Back in 1968 Nicolae Neagu and Ion Panturu succeeded such a performance in the bobsleigh event. At the present edition of the winter Olympics, no less than eight Romanian athletes will compete in the bobsleigh event; Romania’s bobsleigh team is the most numerous of the Romanian delegation. Other four athletes will prove their mettle in the sleigh event, three athletes will compete in the alpine and cross-country racing ski events each, two athletes will take the start in the biathlon event, while other two will participate in the skeleton event. Figure skating and ski jumping each will see one Romanian athlete taking the start in the event.
Interesting to note, though, is the fact that at the present edition of the Winter Olympics host country Russia does not have the most numerous delegation. They have 223 athletes, while the United States’ delegation includes 230 competitors. All told, taking the start in the competition will be more than 3,000 athletes, coming from around 90 countries. No less than 13 thousand journalists are expected at the present edition of the Olympics. According to estimates, the events will draw around three billion TV viewers.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held on Friday, February 7.
