Romanian tennis has secured its comeback among the world's elite.
The Romanian women’s tennis team this past Sunday succeeded a historic win. In Montreal, Romania’s lineup headed by Alina Tecsor overpowered Canada, 3-2, and got through to the Fed Cup’s world group. For the first time ever, Romania has thus earned a position among the world’s top eight teams.
Romania’s success is all the more praiseworthy since it occurred without two of its best tennis players: the world’s number three tennis player Simona Halep and WTA 62nd ranked Monica Niculescu. Therefore, proving their mettle for Romania were WTA 33rd ranked Irina Begu, Alexandra Dulgheru, who last week was 69th placed, and Andreaa Mitu, ranking 104th. In the doubles event, pairing up with Andreea Mitu was Raluca Olaru, WTA 62nd-placed according to women’s doubles ranking.
On Saturday, Alexandra Dulgheru had no problem securing a straight-sets win against Canada’s WTA 7th ranked Eugenie Bouchard, 6-4, 6-4. Francoise Abanda earned a point for the host team, by grabbing a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win against Irina Begu. On Sunday, Andreea Mitu secured yet another win against Eugenie Bouchard, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Alexandra Dulgheru earned the crucial point for her team, outperforming Francoise Abanda, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. In the doubles confrontation, which mattered only for the record, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Sharon Fichman defeated Andreea Mitu and Raluca Olaru, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.
The drawing of lots for the World Group’s quarterfinals will decide Romania’s opponent from among the teams of Germany, the Czech Republic, France or Russia. The four teams played the 2015 edition of the semifinals, won by the Czech Republic and Russia. The quarterfinals of the World Group’s upcoming edition are scheduled for February 6th and 7th 2016, and the semifinals will be played in April 2016.
