The Romanian women’s handball club CSM Bucharest last week managed to qualify to the Champions League Final Four. In the quarterfinals CSM won against FTC Rail Cargo Budapest, also known as Ferencvaros. In the first leg played two weeks ago in Bucharest, CSM had won 30-25. In the return leg played on Saturday in Budapest, the Romanian champions again won, this time narrowly, 27-26. The Romanian handballers had the lead throughout the game, putting on a solid performance.
In the semis, CSM Bucharest will be taking on Vardar Skopje of FYROM, the same team the Romanians played against last year in the Final Four tournament. This year as well, the other semi-final will be pitting Gyor of Hungary against Buducnost Podgorica of Montenegro, the former being the club of Romanian Cristina Neagu.
In the quarterfinals, Vardar Skopje defeated Midtjylland of Denmark. In turn, Buducnost Podgorica knocked out Larvik of Norway, while the Hungarian team Gyor ousted Metz of France on aggregate, with a six-goal lead on home turf in the return leg, after losing 31-32 away from home in the first game.
In the Final Four last year, CSM Bucharest defeated Vardar Skopje 27-21, while Gyor won narrowly against Buducnost, 21-20. In the bronze final, Vardar defeated Buducnost 30-28, while CSM won the title, after defeating Gyor 29-26 after extra time and the penalty shootout.(translated by V. Palcu, edited by D. Vijeu)
